Elgin City manager Stefan Laird believes his team’s good possession game will return and praises first quarter of William Hill League 2 season ahead of Edinburgh City’s revenge mission

Very few pass marks for their passing - but the manager isn’t concerned in the slightest.

Elgin City manager Stefan Laird is confident that his team’s possession football will come to the fore once again - possibly against Edinburgh City today.

As thrilled as Laird was with last Saturday’s 2-1 league win at Forfar on Saturday, he described his team’s passing of the ball as “hopeless” but was thrilled to win ugly.

On Tuesday, when a much-changed Black and Whites went down 1-0 to Aberdeen B in the KDM Evolution Trophy, the boss said his team’s passing was poor for much of the tie.

But Laird pointed to occasion over an encouraging campaign so far where Elgin’s passing game has been excellent and helped to get them important results.

“It’s something we work on all the time,” he said. “It’s not a concern for me.

“Our opposition manager in his interview on Saturday alluded to us playing to our strengths by being off the ball.

“We were off the ball by design on Saturday. We’ve scored 27 league goals already, which is not bad for a team that's been off the ball.

“It’s the most the club's ever scored at this point in the season. We've scored over 40 goals in all competitions.

“So I don't think in possession it’s generally a problem for our team. I think the best thing about us is the variety we've shown.

“We've beaten teams in possession. We've beaten teams on the break. And on Saturday we beat a team in a war.

“So they've ticked all three boxes. Let's see if we can combine all three. It would be nice, wouldn't it?”

That will be the plan for the visit of an Edinburgh City side who Elgin defeated 5-0 in the capital on the opening day of the League 2 season.

Since then, Edinburgh have improved vastly to overcome a five-point deduction and quickly get away from the foot of the table to plot a course for the higher reaches.

That stunning five-goal win in August alone will make City’s chances all the more difficult, Laird feels.

“We're playing great and we’ve had a really good first quarter. We're right up there in contention.

“I know the staff at Edinburgh City well. I'm good friends with them and I speak to them regularly.

“They'll have been smarting pretty hard after that defeat we gave them on the opening day. So they will be right bang up for it, coming for revenge.

“We'll need a hell of a lot better than we were (against Aberdeen B) to get three points on Saturday. But I'm 100 per cent sure we will be.”

Lewis Hyde has been out of the Elgin team since August.

Laird will bring Jack MacIver, Kyle Girvan, Liam Scullion, Matty Grant and Aaron Cummings back into his squad from Tuesday, and Lewis Hyde could be fit enough for some minutes after returning to the bench in midweek from a long-term injury problem.
