Xabi Alonso desperately wants Everton star but the price tag is huge

Chelsea are reportedly interested in signing Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite as Xabi Alonso looks to add to his defensive options ahead of next year.

The Everton centre-back has enjoyed an impressive start to the season after an injury-disrupted campaign last term. Branthwaite has re-established himself as one of the Premier League's most highly rated defenders.

His performances have also earned him a return to the England setup, with several leading clubs now monitoring his situation at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Chelsea are among those admirers, but any potential move could prove difficult to complete. Everton have little desire to lose one of their most important players and are in a strong negotiating position after tying him down to a long-term contract.

Chelsea interested in Jarrad Branthwaite as Everton plan revealed

According to recent reports, via Live Score, Chelsea love Branthwaite and may very well look to sign him within the next 12 months.

The reports suggests the Blues are planning to enter the market for another centre-back in 2027, with the Toffees' England international among the players they're already strongly considering.

Branthwaite's profile understandably appeals to Chelsea. He has several seasons of Premier League experience, is left-footed and possesses the physical attributes to compete at the highest level. All rare traits that naturally come with a high price tag.

The problem isn't just the money, though. Chelsea are not alone in their pursuit. Manchester United have previously attempted to sign him, while clubs from overseas are also believed to be in the mix.

Everton stance could complicate Chelsea transfer move

Everton's determination to retain Branthwaite is understandable given his importance to David Moyes' side.

The defender signed a contract running until 2030, leaving the Merseyside club under no immediate pressure to sell, hence why previous interest from Manchester United failed to result in an agreement.

Recent reports have put the Toffees' valuation at around £80 million, a significant fee that would make any potential transfer another major investment for Chelsea.

Nevertheless, the Blues continue to be linked with defensive additions as Alonso works to build a side capable of challenging consistently at the top end of the Premier League.

Chelsea's defensive performances have attracted scrutiny this season, particularly Maxence Lacroix, who Jamie Carragher, believes doesn't look comfortable in Alonso's fluid system.

Branthwaite would offer experience and the potential to develop further, but Everton's financial demands, along with the increasing competition for his signature, could make a deal for Chelsea very complicated.
