There were a number of controversial refereeing decisions made in the Premier League clash between Liverpool and Arsenal on Sunday afternoon.

Arsenal managed to pick up their first win at Anfield since 2012, with Kai Havertz's 16th minute goal proving to be the difference between the sides.

Liverpool were left incensed by a number of controversial decisions that went against them during the match. The Reds thought they should have had a penalty when Alexander Isak appeared to be pulled back by Gabriel Magalhães inside the box.

The Reds were also denied a spot-kick after a tussle between Cody Gakpo and Christos Tzolis, while Noni Madueke escaped a red card after going head-to-head with Alexis Mac Allister.

It all kicked off between the two sides in the second half when Mac Allister went to ground after clashing heads with Madueke.

Mac Allister was incensed and was adamant that Madueke deserved to be sent off. Referee Andy Madley did not agree, though, and VAR also decided it was not a red card worthy offense.

VAR said, as per the Premier League Match Centre X account: “All of the situations have been checked and cleared. There is some contact as Madueke and Mac Allister square-up. In my opinion, it's not forceful, not violent, not brutal."

Jamie Carragher was covering the match for Sky Sports and, despite being a Liverpool fan, he was absolutely furious with Mac Allister.

He agreed Madueke did not deserve to be given a red card and instead called out Mac Allister's 'embarrassing' actions. He has now demanded a rule change to stop players getting sent off for similar offences in the future.

He said: “I wanted Liverpool to win the game, but I’m delighted he [Madueke] never got sent off there. We have really got to be strong calling people out and just saying, ‘this is embarrassing’.

“It’s got to stop. It’s ridiculous. I said it a couple of weeks ago with a similar sort of thing, I can’t stand it. I think everybody in the country watching football, this head-to-head stuff... if someone puts their head back and butts, of course, red card.

“But this stuff about head to head and if someone touches the other one goes down and the player gets sent off, as a game, as football, people in the Premier League, supporters, call your own people out for it.

“I’m a Liverpool fan. That is a joke from Mac Allister. It’s got to stop. People are trying to gain this advantage because they know they can. Because red cards are getting given for it.

“Whether it’s from Howard Webb [chief refereeing officer for PGMOL], the Premier League, the managers get together, stop getting red cards for this crap.”

Madueke was also asked to give his thoughts about the incident after the match. He said: "I don't think it's anything whether it's a yellow card or a red card. The referee didn't think that. VAR didn't think that. So we all agreed there.

"It's a natural movement. He's obviously clever, he tried to bait me into getting a red card there, but obviously not.

"In my head I was thinking, 'Oh it's possible with VAR it's about whoever interprets it, I don't know what they're thinking. But thankfully it wasn't."

Liverpool and Arsenal are both in Champions League action on Wednesday. Liverpool travel to Turkey to take on Fenerbahce, while Arsenal face Sparta Prague in Czechia.
