Daniel Farke's strong warning to Leeds United substitutes as favourites tag vs Man Utd shunned

The Leeds United boss says the concerns of fans is justifiable

Harry Wilson is one but hardly the only substitute to underwhelm

Daniel Farke has warned his substitutes that they risk being overlooked for selection should they not deliver when called upon.

There has been concern among the Leeds United fanbase that those coming off the bench have not made the desired impact in recent games, and the team has suffered to sustain momentum late in games as a result.

Among those has been Harry Wilson, the first signing of the summer, who has yet to start a Premier League game since the opening day. Meanwhile, Jean-Matteo Bahoya and Melvin Bard were deadline day signings who have had to play catch-up regarding tactics and general settling in.

No substitutes have managed to score in the first six Premier League games and only Lukas Nmecha has provided an assist - a crucial set-up for Dominic Calvert-Lewin in a 1-1 comeback draw against Brentford, the only game in which substitutes have changed the match.

“It's perhaps fair to say that the last couple of games the impact was not too great,” said Farke when asked about the impact of bench players ahead of Sunday’s showdown with Manchester United.

“We had a different scenario in the beginning of the season… I think about the Brentford game, for example, when there was a big impact.

“The last two or three games were perhaps not that impressive. Sometimes you have to accept that there is perhaps a period during the season when once or twice perhaps the impact is not that great.

“But it’s the responsibility of whoever comes from the bench this time around [to] make an impact. And if you don't make an impact then quite often there’s a chance that someone else comes in.

“So there is competition and perhaps a player who was not coming in the last game days, he gets a chance in this moment, and he can grab it.

"We all have to have to deliver. We have to have a bit more impact once we substitute.”

Leeds have not beaten arch rivals Man Utd at Elland Road for 24 years, but many believe the hosts go in as favourites this weekend. The Whites have only lost one league match so far, while the Red Devils have not won in four games and have only one league victory.

“I'm not sure if we’re the favourites,” Farke rebutted. “I know how the perception is. We had a brilliant start during this new season and are in a really good position. And yes, perhaps many have found it tough to win the last matches.

“But nevertheless, if you have a look at the two squads, if you have a look how long they spent on Premier League level, you have to say that they are definitely not the underdog in a game against Leeds United.

“If you have a look at their transfer value of the team and the quality that they have and also the options, I think it's still a very dangerous opponent. And I think even more dangerous when they come on the back of a few games without a win.”
