Max Verstappen, the four-time Formula 1 World Champion, encountered a stern reprimand from race stewards following a collision in the opening practice session of the GT World Challenge Europe at Portimao. The incident unfolded early on a congested track, where Verstappen attempted an audacious inside pass on the #25 Audi at Turn 3. The move ended in contact, spinning the Audi and prompting the stewards to issue Verstappen a Behavioural Warning Point and a formal reprimand for the clash. Onboard footage captured Verstappen’s visible frustration as he raised his hand in response to the collision.
Despite the early setback, Verstappen maintained focus and delivered a solid first stint during the second free practice (FP2) for the #3 Mercedes. After handing over the car to teammate Ben Barnicoat, the #3 machine held P8, trailing the overall pace by just under four tenths of a second. As the session progressed, the car slipped slightly to P10 before returning to the garage for minor adjustments.
Chris Lulham then took the wheel with 23 minutes remaining and swiftly improved the #3 Mercedes’ best lap time to 1:43.482. Although a #17 Mercedes led with a 1:42.988, Lulham’s pace propelled the #3 car to fourth overall and second in the Pro Cup class with five minutes remaining, just 0.25 seconds shy of teammate Ralf Aron’s #17 Mercedes. The session closed with the #3 Mercedes firmly placed in these positions, establishing a strong platform ahead of qualifying for the final round of the 2026 GT World Challenge Europe season.
Verstappen’s return to GT racing at Portimao comes hot on the heels of his commanding back-to-back victories at the Bahrain and Singapore Grands Prix in Formula 1’s intense triple-header. With the F1 season resuming next week at the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Verstappen’s focus remains split between two high-profile motorsport disciplines.
The tightly packed FP2 results—less than 0.8 seconds separating the top 28 cars—underscore the razor-thin margins shaping the championship battle. As qualifying looms, Verstappen and the #3 Mercedes team will need to transform their promising practice pace into a decisive grid position.
Reflecting on the collision, race officials confirmed Verstappen’s reprimand but allowed him to continue without further penalty. This disciplinary action serves as a reminder of the fine line between aggressive racing and costly mistakes in the fiercely competitive GT World Challenge Europe.
Max Verstappen’s seamless transition back into GT racing, despite early controversy, highlights his versatility and determination to compete at the highest levels. The Portimao showdown promises gripping battles, with Verstappen’s #3 Mercedes poised as a key contender in the Pro Cup class.
