Dallas Cowboys legend Michael Irvin has pushed back against Emmanuel Acho’s comparison between LeSean McCoy and Emmitt Smith. Acho recently argued that McCoy was more talented than the Cowboys legend, sparking a strong reaction from Irvin.
McCoy’s elusiveness and Smith‘s production and durability have become the point of dispute. Irvin’s fiery response has found support among NFL fans, many of whom believe Acho is overlooking what made Smith one of the greatest running backs in league history.
The disagreement followed comments from Acho, a former Eagles linebacker-turned-analyst, who argued that McCoy was more talented than Smith. Acho focused on individual ability, suggesting Smith benefited from playing behind one of football’s best offensive lines.
“With my eyes, I believe that Shady McCoy is a more talented running back than Emmitt Smith,” Acho said. “… When you’re playing behind maybe the greatest O-line in the history of football, having incredible durability and contact balance, that probably trumps elusiveness.”
Irvin pushed back on Acho’s assessment during an episode of The Michael Irvin Podcast, opening with a blunt response: “Bro, shut the hell up.”
He said, “Listen, I’m a fan of what you do, bro. And I watch you convince and confuse others. But it will not slip by me, I’m telling you… I think it’s some of the most [expletive][expletive] I ever hear when we’re talking about football… you’re not going to fake out everybody in the National Football League.”
The former Cowboys receiver then argued that Smith’s durability and ability to absorb contact were essential parts of his greatness, not secondary qualities.
“That’s the most important [expletive] with what we do,” Irvin said. “That you can take a hit and keep it ticking.” He also made his position clear, saying, “In no way is Shady McCoy better than Emmitt Smith.”
Later Irvin said, “Shady is great. Emmitt is greatness. There’s a difference between the two. It’s not even a conversation.”
Smith’s career numbers give Irvin plenty of support. The former Cowboys running back finished with 18,355 rushing yards and 164 touchdowns, both NFL records.
McCoy recorded 11,102 rushing yards and 73 touchdowns. Smith also won three Super Bowls, one NFL MVP and one Super Bowl MVP, while earning four rushing titles.
His 1993 season remains a major part of the argument. Smith became the only running back to win the rushing title, NFL MVP, Super Bowl, and Super Bowl MVP in the same season.
He also missed Dallas’ first two games during a contract dispute before returning to lead the league in rushing. In the regular-season finale against the New York Giants, he played through a separated shoulder and finished with 229 total yards.
Fans supported Irvin’s defense of his former teammate on Instagram.
One user summed up the distinction between the two backs, writing, “‘Shady is great…..Emmett is greatness’ MIC DROP”
Another commenter questioned why Acho receives a platform for such opinions, posting, “That dude is sooooo corny bro… but y’all gave him a voice.”
The discussion also drew frustration from viewers who felt Smith’s achievements deserved more respect. One fan wrote, “Thank you … stop with the Emmitt Smith disrespect.”
A separate reaction showed how tired some viewers have become of Acho’s commentary. “I am sick of Acho,” the user posted.
Another fan returned to the comparison itself, calling it an “Insane take ..shady better than emmit is wild.”
Acho later replied on his podcast, saying, “That was not the conversation. Move the field goal post back to where the conversation was being had. This was a conversation exclusively about talent,” before admitting, “Emmitt is greater.”
McCoy’s best season of his career came in 2013, when he ranked third on PFN’s RB Impact Score with a grade of 89.6. He earned six Pro Bowl selections during his career — three with the Eagles and three with the Bills — before finishing his career with Super Bowl-winning teams in Kansas City and Tampa Bay.
Irvin acknowledged McCoy’s ability, saying both players were great but insisting they should not be judged as equals.
