Texas A&M's defense took a massive hit in late April during the Aggies' Maroon & White Spring game, when senior linebacker Daymion Sanford suffered a serious lower-body injury that was expected to sideline him for at least half the 2026 season. However, Sanford's recovery was much quicker than expected, appearing at SEC Media Days without a walking boot.
Still, the preseason focus was getting back into football shape and building lower-body strength, even though Sanford looked explosive in every practice the media was allowed to watch. Sanford dressed out but didn't play in the Aggies' first two games of the season against Missouri State and Arizona State, and he made his debut in the program's 31-21 home loss to Kentucky.
I don't need to tell you that Texas A&M's 2026 season has been a massive disappointment thus far, as the Aggies sit at 4-3 and 1-3 in the SEC, and after this article is published, a loss, or potential upset win against No. 13 Alabama, will have concluded. Either way, the pressure is mounting on third-year Mike Elko, who needs to live up to his lucrative contract extension.
Over four games, Daymion Sanford has returned to a high level, recording 16 tackles and his first interception of the season against Missouri, while his elite Pro Football Network coverage grade (95.0) ranks sixth nationally among active FBS linebackers.
Texas A&M's 10th-ranked passing defense has benefited from Sanford's return to form, and the Katy, Texas native is on track for the 2027 NFL Draft if this level of play continues.
