Indianapolis Colts players met with local media members on Wednesday for the first time since GM Chris Ballard was fired. Among those to speak was quarterback Anthony Richardson, who was asked about the support that Ballard provided.
“I always appreciate any support I get, especially from a guy like that, his position that he had on this team," Richardson said, via The Athletic's James Boyd. "He believed in me enough to have me here. I’m forever grateful for that. I’m trying to do my part and not make him feel like he made the wrong decision with me being here. So I'm just trying to keep getting better every week and just waiting on my opportunity."
Ballard selected Richardson with the fourth overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft. Richardson started 15 games over his first two seasons as he navigated various injuries and was benched at one point during the 2024 season.
Richardson had his struggles with consistency, completing just 51% of his career passes with 11 passing touchdowns to 13 interceptions. However, in those games, the Colts had an 8-7 record.
Richardson was relegated to the backup role in 2025 after losing the quarterback competition to Daniel Jones over that summer. Early this offseason, he requested a trade, but that never came to fruition.
Richardson is currently the backup quarterback for the Colts after beating out Riley Leonard for that role this summer.
