Blackburn Rovers play-off chances assessed by pundit

Rovers have made a bright start to the league campaign, outperforming most pre-expectations with 11 matches played.

They are not perfect but look a far better side than the one who struggled so much last season.

Morrison believes that is down to Mowbray's impact, having felt they were being harshly ranked before a ball was kicked.

"Pundits who I know, who are good friends of mine, tipped them to go down," Morrison told Lancashire Telegraph via BetSelect.co.uk.

"I always ring them now and say, 'You still think Blackburn could go down?' But you know what Blackburn have got? A fantastic manager.

"I've said this all along, Tony Mowbray is one of the best to do it. He's been there, seen it, done it, and been around for many years.

"They don't have much money to compete with the big boys; when he's bringing in players, he's bringing in free transfers and experienced players.

"I didn't tip them personally to go down, because with a club like Blackburn, size sometimes doesn't matter.

"When you've got a manager like Tony Mowbray with the wealth of experience he brings to a football club, I always knew they'd be all right.

"Tony will make it like it's them against the world. Everyone thinks we're doomed, but in our little tight group, we're going to stick together and kick on and do ever so well. That's why I think Blackburn will be fine."

Rovers are in 10th and on the coattails of the extended play-off places.

Morrison believes with the right January additions, they could be a surprise package for the top eight.

"There's always a team that comes late and gets into those play-offs," he explained.

"You could finish eighth or ninth and still be one of the teams that go on to win it. It opens it up for the teams that can't spend a lot of money, and I like it.

"I do feel that if Mowbray can get a bit of help from the owners come January, then why can't Blackburn challenge to finish in one of those play-off places?

"I don't want to get ahead of myself, and Blackburn fans might think I am, but they've got a good squad, and he's inherited a good squad, so long may it continue."

As a former striker himself, Morrison has been impressed by Andri Gudjohnsen's hot form. He's scored seven goals in all competitions so far for Rovers.

"Like his dad, he is banging them in and he's been on fire," he said.

"I was worried about where the goals would come from, but Gudjohnsen's been outstanding. He's just scoring goals for fun. Sometimes you're only as good as your strikers.

"The young man's just taken to it, and he's been outstanding. It's hard to score goals in the Championship. It's difficult when your team isn't creating many chances, but on the chances he gets, he's been really lethal.

"I watched their game against West Brom the other day. They were unfortunate not to come away with even a point, and he was lethal again, banging in the goal.

"A lot of people tipped Blackburn [to go down], but when you've got Mowbray, and you've got Gudjohnsen, you've got a good chance."
