Morton finance chief refuses to rule out administration by end of year

The Scottish Championship club are dealing with a budget gap of £335,000 following missed payments from major sponsors Dalrada.

The company had promised payments to the club but have missed monthly deposits since July. That has left Ton in a financial shortfall and scrambling to find new income avenues which has proved difficult.

It is anticipated the club could potentially run out of money by the end of December despite a fans' fighting fund raising more than £70,000.

There have been worries among the support over their club's future and Weldin offered a lengthy update on the situation.

And while he opened up on plans to try and find new revenue streams, the club chief addressed the potential of administration head on and admitted it was impossible to rule out.

He did, however, acknowledge that it was also "not inevitable", albeit things would have to change.

"I am also aware of increasing discussion among supporters regarding administration. Given the level of interest, it is important to address that point directly and carefully," he said.

"I cannot give supporters a commitment that administration will not occur. Equally, it is not an inevitable or predetermined outcome. Administration is a formal process through which an organisation may seek protection from its creditors while an alternative outcome is pursued.

"The Club remains actively engaged with its creditors and suppliers, many of whom have shown considerable patience, understanding and support during a difficult period. On behalf of the Board, I thank them for that support.

"We continue to take professional advice and actively manage the situation. Several levers remain available, including the funding, investment and liquidity options outlined above and, if necessary, a controlled financial realignment consistent with the Club’s financial reality. Sponsorship and investment opportunities are being assessed prudently, using conservative assumptions rather than relying on best-case outcomes.

"Supporters are right to maintain a strong interest in the Club’s financial position and the actions being taken. However, I would encourage care in the use of the word “administration.” It is a specific legal process rather than a general description of financial difficulty, and speculation can have unintended consequences for the Club, its creditors, regulators and other stakeholders.

"The position nevertheless remains serious. Additional funding remains necessary, difficult decisions may still be required and considerable work remains to be done. The Fighting Fund provides additional runway and preserves options, but it is intended as a temporary liquidity facility rather than a permanent funding solution.

"Without additional funding by the end of the calendar year, some form of financial realignment will ultimately be required."
