“CFB Regular Season Died the Year Ohio State Won Their Asterisk Title”: Dave Portnoy Sounds Off on Potential Playoff Expansion to 24 Teams

College football is rapidly evolving, but Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy is not a fan of some of the proposed changes.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported that the College Football Playoff is reaching an agreement to expand from 12 teams to 24 teams starting in the 2027 season. The report also states that the agreement is pending final approval from relevant authorities.

On Thursday, Portnoy used the opportunity to take a shot at Ohio State while criticizing the potential format change.

“I don’t love this, but the college football regular season died the year Ohio State won their asterisk title as the 3rd place team in the Big 10 and lost at home as 20 pt favorites to Michigan and Ohio fans still had the audacity to act like they had a winning season when in any other year Ryan Day is fired,” Portnoy wrote on X.

The Buckeyes are rivals of Portnoy’s alma mater, Michigan, in the Big Ten. The Buckeyes defeated the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to win the national championship in 2025. That same season, Ohio State lost to the Wolverines. They finished with a 10-2 record overall.

However, Ohio State head coach Ryan Day avenged that loss by beating the Wolverines 27-9 at Michigan Stadium last season.

How the Proposed CFP 24-Team Format Would Work

The proposed 24-team playoff field would finalize the teams through a 19+4+1 model. According to CBS Sports, 19 teams would be at-large selections, four automatic spots would go to Power Four conference champions, and one would go to the highest-ranked Group of Six champion.

The top eight teams would skip the opening round. Higher-seeded teams are expected to host the first two rounds, with the New Year’s Six bowls hosting the quarterfinals and semifinals.

The biggest drawback of this expansion would be that Power Four conferences would have to eliminate their title games to make room for the expanded postseason. As a result, the Power Four conferences could lose significant broadcast revenue from those games. Moreover, the regular season could start a week earlier.

The CFP and ESPN have continued negotiating media rights for the additional playoff games. The deadline to agree on the 24-team College Football Playoff field is Dec. 1, following which no changes can be made to the format.
