Michael Carrick reveals talks with Manchester United board amid uncertain future

Michael Carrick is "100 per cent" confident that he can turn Manchester United's results around amid increasing pressure.

Carrick's future at Old Trafford was thrown into major doubt when his side lost 4-1 against Como in the Champions League earlier this week, a result that extended United's winless run to seven games.

The Reds have made their worst start to a Premier League season for 40 years and have won just two of 11 games across all competitions, which has forced the club's decision-makers to consider managerial alternatives.

Eddie Howe, Unai Emery, Antonio Conte and Julian Nagelsmann have all been mentioned. Former Newcastle manager Howe, who departed the Magpies over the summer, is thought to be Jason Wilcox's managerial preference.

Speaking after the Como defeat, Carrick admitted he "did not like" what he saw from his players, and his future is now in the balance as United prepare to take on Bournemouth on Sunday afternoon.

"We've spoken," said Carrick on whether the club's hierarchy has held conversations about the poor results.

"There are always conversations going on. It's obvious how we're all feeling. The responsibility for me to be in this position is to lead, it's my responsibility for whatever goes on on the pitch. I'll hold the umbrella for me to stay wet and for others to stay dry."

When Carrick was asked if he was confident of turning United's results around, he said: "Yeah, yeah, 100%, yeah."

Carrick admitted he is hurt by the current situation but vowed to fight on. "It hurts an awful lot, but it doesn't stop me," he said. "That hurt is pure motivation to want more, expect more, and work for more to get us going in that different direction."

United take on Bournemouth this weekend. The Cherries were winless in the Premier League until last weekend when they beat Sunderland, and they have also secured wins against Sturm Graz and AC Milan in the Europa League over the last eight days.

"We want more," Carrick said. "It feels like it can be a long way away but it doesn't take much to flip that. We have a very tough game on Sunday. It does not become an easy game. If you don't [feel like me], this isn't the right place for you."
