How Mercedes can win the F1 Constructors’ title at the Sao Paolo GP
How Mercedes can win the F1 Constructors’ title at the Sao Paolo GP

After Kimi Antonelli’s record-breaking title triumph in Mexico, now it’s time for his Mercedes team to try and clinch the constructors’ title too.

After producing a car which has been the class of the field in 2026, the team has an almost unassailable lead at the top of the standings.

We run through what Mercedes needs to seal the trophy this weekend at the Sao Paulo GP in Brazil.

Mercedes’ route to winning the 2026 Constructors’ title

Kimi Antonelli made history by winning the drivers’ world championship at the age of 20 years and 68 days, breaking Sebastian Vettel’s 2010 record by over three years.

"I would not be here without Mercedes or my family. I am speechless, trying to process what just happened," Antonelli said in the aftermath.

"A day I will remember forever. So grateful, thank you so much. I am going to enjoy every bit."

In stark contrast to the Italian’s triumph, this season has been a struggle for teammate George Russell, the Brit finding himself fourth in the standings after struggling to get to grips with the 2026 W17 car.

Despite this, he’s scored enough points along with Antonelli to secure the constructors’ title for the team known as the SIlver Arrows this weekend.

What Mercedes needs to the win the 2026 Constructors’ title

Mercedes currently has a 126-point lead over nearest contender Ferrari in the Constructors’ race, 630 to the Scuderia’s 504.

With a maximum 129 points on offer across the remaining three races after Brazil, Mercedes simply needs to outscore Ferrari by just three points at Interlagos to secure the title.

If it were to outscore the Scuderia and then fail to get any points for the final three races, with Ferrari finishing 1-2 in every event, then the two manufacturers would end the season level.

However, Mercedes, having won 12 races to Ferrari’s two, would win the title on count-back.

What the Mercedes and Ferrari teams said heading into the 2026 Sao Paulo GP

"Our focus has already moved to São Paulo,” Wolff stated prior to the race. “We came into this season wanting to fight for both championships and there is still a job left to finish.

"The teams’ title is about the performance of the entire operation, both at the track and back in Brackley and Brixworth, and securing it would mean a great deal to all of us. Nothing is won yet, though. Interlagos is always a demanding weekend and there is little margin for error. We need to execute strongly from the first session and put ourselves in the best possible position to bring home both titles this season."

Wolff expanded on what the title would mean to the team in the Brazil press conference.

“The constructors’ is obviously the one that pays the bonuses,” he said.

“So it's something that is very, very important for all of the organisation. You know, you pay the mortgage, the kitchen, or the holiday, or the school of the children, and the drivers [are] also very aware of that.”

With Ferrari’s chances of a title minimal and the team still weathering the storm of the fallout between Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, its words were muted, implying the fact it could have had a big result in Mexico were it not for the infighting between its drivers.

“We are happy to be back on track less than a week after the Mexico race, where we confirmed that we are moving in the right direction in terms of performance,” said team boss Frederic Vasseur.

“Interlagos is a demanding circuit, with a short lap, changes of elevation and a wide variety of corners, while the weather can make the weekend even more unpredictable. We will need to build our competitiveness session by session and remain focused on maximising the opportunities.”
