Liverpool Chase This 17-Year-Old Bundesliga Gem: Is Summer 2027 The Time To Strike?

Liverpool transfer news has rarely mattered more than after a summer that stripped Anfield of three foundations. Mohamed Salah, Andrew Robertson and Ibrahima Konaté left on free transfers, and Andoni Iraola replaced Arne Slot in June.

Nine league games in, the Reds sit sixth with 15 points from four wins, three draws and two defeats, an uneven start unlike their European form. They occupy eighth place in the Champions League league phase after three wins from four matches. A net summer spend above £140 million underlines the scale of the reshaping.

The money went on the frontline. Bradley Barcola arrived from Paris Saint-Germain for £107 million, Víctor Muñoz joined from Osasuna, Curtis Jones left for Inter Milan at £26 million, and Harvey Elliott went on loan to Valencia, clearing excess midfield depth.

Liverpool signed no traditional number 10, because Florian Wirtz owns the role. He has started all nine league games with two assists, Dominik Szoboszlai has one goal in seven starts, Alexis Mac Allister has started every match as the creative engine, and Trey Nyoni offers developmental cover.

A Bielsa-influenced coach, Iraola demands aggressive counter-pressing, rapid transitions and technical security under pressure from a high-intensity, vertical 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 hybrid. That requirement explains a new name on Anfield’s radar.

Mohya report and the Iraola fit

CaughtOffside, citing TEAMtalk as the original source, reports that Liverpool are interested in Borussia Monchengladbach’s 17-year-old attacking midfielder Wael Mohya. The German-Moroccan has five goals and two assists in 27 first-team appearances so far. Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen, RB Leipzig and Brighton also want him. Gladbach hope to extend his deal beyond 2028 with a new release clause, and a January sale looks unlikely, pointing to summer 2027.

Mohya offers composure in crowded spaces, vision between the lines, press resistance and spatial awareness, exactly what Iraola wants from a central advanced midfielder receiving under pressure and releasing the ball vertically. The risk is physical. At 17, he is raw, his defensive tracking is developing, and he lacks full-match consistency, while Iraola’s relentless pressing needs big engines.

Liverpool transfer news: Should Liverpool sign Wael Mohya in 2027?

Not for this season. Wirtz holds the creative reins, Szoboszlai adds physical and technical presence, and Mac Allister covers the base, so Liverpool’s starting needs are met. Summer 2027 is different. Losing Salah and the others for nothing drained attacking leverage, so Liverpool must collect elite young talent before valuations explode.

Waiting until Mohya becomes a polished 20-year-old invites an inflated fee, or defeat by Bayern or Dortmund. A loan pathway suits them, like the summer deal for goalkeeper Lucca Brughmans, letting Mohya develop while Liverpool hold his rights. Skip January, accept Gladbach’s release-clause structure and secure a tactical heir to the advanced midfield before continental rivals close the gate.
