The Magpies are trying to improve their Academy scouting system and have invited two young stars from Africa to Tyneside for a trial

Newcastle United have handed a month-long opportunity to two promising African youngsters after Omar Marong and Alieu Saine arrived a the club on trial this month.

The duo are currently with TMT Academy in Gambia and are deemed hot prospects in the African region. Marong is skipper of the Gambia Under-17s while winger Saine was one of the recent stars during their WAFU A U-17 Tournament win, which was looked at by the Magpies.

A report by Gambian journalist Ebrima KB Sonko read: "The players left Banjul International Airport for England, where they are scheduled to undergo a month-long trial with Premier League side Newcastle United.

"The opportunity has been arranged through Beyond Borders Agency, with the pair set to showcase their talents during their stay in England. "The month-long trial presents an important opportunity for the two TMT talents to take another step in their football development and showcase their abilities on a bigger stage."

The arrival on the duo on trial comes on the back of Chronicle Live's report last month which revealed that Newcastle were focusing on bringing talent from Africa to Tyneside. A new role of Scouting Analyst (Africa) has already had a number of applicants as sporting director Ross Wilson looks to enhance the club's recruitment department.

The advert for the exciting new role reads: "You'll scout and analyse prospective players across multiple levels of African football, primarily through video. Research African football markets, competitions, academies and player pathways. Attend occasional live matches and travel domestically or internationally when required."

Down the years, Newcastle have had some real stars from Africa, including Papiss Cisse, Obafemi Martins, Lomana LuaLua, Demba Ba, Christian Atsu and Cheick Tiote. But Newcastle are looking to find untapped talent as they look to grow their scouting capabilities.

Sporting director Ross Wilson has spoken before about the identity he is attempting to create at Newcastle with a number of moves to bolster the recruitment drive.

Wilson had said on the club's sporting model back in August: "I had a clear idea, identity-wise, what I wanted Newcastle to look like, which was absolutely shared (by) ownership. The key for us was getting to the end of the window really feeling that identity.

"We're not patting ourselves on the back, but we have to move forwards bravely and strongly. There's still lots of work to be done to get the whole club where we want to get it to."
