Los Angeles coach Sean McVay’s Rams fell to an embarrassing 18-16 Week 6 loss to the Arizona Cardinals despite being 12.5-point favorites, the biggest upset by points spread so far this season. The loss dropped the Rams to 2-4 on the season, despite being considered strong Super Bowl favorites in the preseason.

After the Rams’ loss to the Cardinals, New England Patriots icons Julian Edelman and Rob Gronkowski outlined the blueprint for McVay’s team to get back on track.

During Monday’s segment of the “Gronk & Jules Show,” Edelman insisted that Los Angeles needs to go back to running the ball more during games.

“I feel like, for me, the Rams need to get back to running the football more,” Edelman said. “I know they’re banged up at tight end and they don’t have Ferguson and I know that they’re dealing with injuries there. But I feel like everytime Kyren Williams or Corum gets the ball, it’s like five yards. Why don’t we just keep on doing it and run it and save our guys?”

The Rams ran the ball only 20 times against Arizona, finishing with 92 rushing yards at 4.6 yards per carry. After the game, running back Kyren Williams voiced frustration about his reduced role in the team’s inconsistent offense.

Los Angeles put up just 16 points against the Cardinals, and quarterback Matthew Stafford failed to jump-start an offense that has struggled with consistency this season. Los Angeles has earned PFN’s NFL Offense Impact grade of 75.0 (No. 14 in the NFL) this season.

Gronkowski supported Edelman’s assertion about the Rams’ need to run the ball more often to control games and support quarterback Matthew Stafford.

“Take some pressure off of Stafford as well. They need to; there’s a lot of pressure on him,” Gronkowski said. “They got to run the ball. When they run the ball, even going back to last year, man, they’re dominant. They can control the line of scrimmage; they can control the time of possession of the ball. But I’m kind of out on those Los Angeles Rams. I had them as my Super Bowl pick going into this season,” he said.

Gronkowski added, “And I finally thought a super team is gonna be able to pull it off and win a Super Bowl. It’s finally gonna make sense. But I don’t know what it is with these super teams. I’m all out. I’ll never believe in a super team again unless if the Rams can turn it around. But they just look like they’re getting bullied on the football field.”

The Rams have accumulated 676 rushing yards on 148 attempts this season (112.7 yards per game & 4.6 yards per carry). The No. 15-ranked Rams fall way below the NFL’s leading rushers, the Chicago Bears, who have 964 yards on 216 attempts (160.7 rushing yards per game).

McVay’s team is the fifth outright preseason Super Bowl favorite in the last 50 years to have a losing record after six games, and none of the previous four even reached a conference championship game. Since they won a Super Bowl five seasons ago, the Rams have had near-constant slow starts, going 3-3, 3-3, 2-4, 4-2, and now 2-4 again.
