Brentford v Nottingham Forest: Insight from Forest correspondent Sarah Clapson

Brentford welcome Nottingham Forest to Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday (3pm kick-off GMT).

Liam Delap, Nottingham Forest

Ahead of the game, Sarah Clapson, Nottingham Forest correspondent for Nottinghamshire Live and Nottingham Post, assesses the visitors’ start to the season, explains their approach under Oliver Glasner and picks out their key players.

Nottingham Forest are 18th in the Premier League, with one win from their first seven games. What have you made of their start?

It has been mixed overall. There have been some positives and also a few areas that need working on and need improving.

Oliver Glasner does tend to be a slow starter at clubs, so this is perhaps not completely unexpected.

He has said himself that patience is needed and that it is going to take time as Forest are adapting to a new system, to his way of playing. It is just taking a while for them to get going and to get any kind of rhythm.

They are really struggling to score goals at the minute and that is proving to be quite costly, particularly at home where they have not scored at all yet in all competitions.

It is a problem that pre-dates Glasner’s arrival as they were struggling for goals last season and their home form was poor at the end of last season as well, so it is not entirely a new issue, though he is the one tasked with correcting it.

It has been inconsistent, that is probably the best way to sum it up so far.

Forest have taken the third-most shots in the division (120) but have scored the joint-second fewest number of goals (5). How much frustration is that causing?

They know they are doing a lot of good things; getting into good positions, putting good moves together, creating chances.

Glasner has said himself that if they were not creating those opportunities, he would be concerned. Forest are – but they are just not converting them.

It is not even just one player that is missing chances at the moment; Chris Wood missed a big one against Arsenal, Murillo and Liam Delap did against Crystal Palace.

They had so many shots against Palace and could have probably been 5-0 or 6-0 up at half-time but somehow conspired to lose 3-1.

From the optimistic perspective, you would like to think that will soon turn, that they will eventually start getting the goals and then results will follow.

Which player should Brentford fans keep an eye on?

Morgan Gibbs-White remains the key man for Forest. He was missing against Arsenal with a muscle injury, but I am sure he will be back for the Brentford game.

He has not necessarily been at his best this season, but he is still capable of coming up with magic moments and making things happen. He has got that spark and he is really their talisman in that respect.

James McAtee is someone else to watch. He has started the season in terrific form. He is playing a little bit deeper than what he did last season and he has really relished that role and thrived in it.

Glasner has really transformed him, in a way, and made him someone who is so central to the way Forest play.

What should Keith Andrews’ side expect in terms of shape and style?

Glasner has implemented a different formation, which is perhaps unsurprising given the way Palace used to play. He likes his three at the back and that has been the case so far.

He is always saying he can be flexible with formations and he is not wedded to one particular style, but so far that is the way Forest have played and I do not see him changing it any time soon.

That means the wing-backs are really key because they have to get up and down and have to be so full of energy. Also, Forest don’t mind not seeing a lot of the ball and they do try to create moments from that.

What’s your score prediction?

Forest have been better on the road recently, so they will probably see this as one they can try and get a result from.

It feels like it will click in attack at some point, but I am not sure where! I will go for a 2-2 draw.
