Daizen Maeda is off the mark for Ipswich Town after scoring against Manchester City in Saturday’s 3-2 defeat at the Etihad Stadium.
Maeda left Celtic for Ipswich this summer but was yet to get off the mark for his new club. That was until the 21st minute against Enzo Maresca’s side.
The former Celtic forward brought Ipswich level after 21 minutes. It was one of the few chances he had against Pep Guardiola’s side, but he made it count.
And not only that, Maeda’s stats tell a whole lot more.
Phil Foden opened the scoring in the 19th minute, but Maeda brought Ipswich level just two minutes later.
Abdoul Ouattara played a through ball into the Japanese international’s path. Maeda raced beyond Marc Guehi before beating Gianluigi Donnarumma with a low finish.
Ipswich posted footage of the goal on their official X account.

Erling Haaland scored twice to restore City’s advantage before Zian Flemming converted a late penalty to make it 3-2.
Maeda was on the pitch for 71 minutes and had just 18 touches. He took one shot all afternoon and scored with it.
FotMob’s match data shows that the Celtic hero had the ball inside City’s box only once. His passing was tidy enough, with ten successful attempts from 12, an accuracy of 83%.
FotMob rated his scoring chance at 0.40 expected goals (xG). The shot itself registered 0.85 expected goals on target (xGOT).
There was plenty of running from the Japanese international despite his limited involvement on the ball. He covered 9.3km, made 13 sprints and hit a top speed of 33.4km/h.
The running numbers were familiar from his Celtic days. What stood out against City was how little service Maeda received. He had one opportunity inside the penalty area and put it away.
