Why Derek Stingley Will Be Texans' Most Important Player vs. Giants

The Houston Texans need Derek Stingley to deliver against the New York Giants.

The Houston Texans' Week 7 date vs. the New York Giants is right around the corner.

And for the Texans, it's a massive matchup for them to take advantage of. They enter the game as favorites of more than a touchdown, are looking to win their third straight game, while also heading into their Week 8 bye on a bit of a high note.

However, even while the Texans enter this one with the upper hand in terms of talent on paper, that doesn't mean this game is going to be easy–– especially against a talent like Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers. A standout game on his behalf could quickly make this game a bit more interesting to watch unfold.

And that's why, for the Texans, All-Pro cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. might be their most important player on the field this Sunday.

Derek Stingley's Struggles Through 2026

Throughout most of this season, Stingley hasn't exactly looked like the All-Pro talent he was over the course of last season. And really, that disappointing start could be said about a vast majorty of the Texans' output in the secondary.

For Stingley, he's allowed his highest passer rating when targeted throughout his career (87.3), while also failing to haul in a single interception through his first six games.

A large part of those lapses can be attributed to Houston's increased use of zone coverage. Stingley has played zone on 76.6% of his coverage snaps, up from 63.3% in 2025, and he's allowed 146 yards in those coverages–– already 41 more than he allowed throughout the course of 2025 (107).

This week though, the Texans could be preparing to decrease that usage of zone that's taken a hit to their secondary's production.

Their starting safety, Reed Blankenship––known to be a better fit in zone coverages––has been ruled out with a concussion/hand injury. Houston will likely start M.J. Stewart next to Calen Bullock and hope to spark some similar success within this pass defense as was seen through 2025.

And that adjustment comes at a perfect time, because the Texans will be up against one of their more challenging matchups at wide receiver in Malik Nabers; someone who's seen 35 total targets over the past two games he's played in en route to hauling in over 23 receptions, 286 yards, and a touchdown.

Derek Stingley Has a Tall Task vs. Malik Nabers

The Texans can't afford to let Nabers have another explosive day against their defense. Nabers will be the centerpiece of the New York offense–– especially for a scoring attack led by J.J. McCarthy in his first start–– and any strong performance on his behalf will likely allow the Giants to stay within striking distance of an upset on the road.

So that's why Stingley Jr. needs to have a statement game here. Odds are, he's going to see a lot of Nabers over the course of this Sunday. We've seen just how badly an elite receiver can have their way against this Texans defense this season (look back at CeeDee Lamb's stat line from Week 4), and a repeat performance here certainly wouldn't be ideal.

Not only would shutting down Nabers boost his individual stock after an up-and-down start to the season, but the Giants' ability to put points on the board takes a significant hit if their No. 1 target is completely shut out by one of the league's best cornerbacks.

Without Nabers making a huge impact, the playmaking for the Giants' offense comes down to the likes of Isaiah Likely, Malachi Fields, Darnell Mooney, and their currently dysfunctional running game committee.

That's a much easier assignment for the Texans to handle, and only becomes possible if Stingley holds up his end of the bargain for a standout day covering one of the league's best receivers on the other end.
