Roy Keane brutally responds to Lisandro Martinez’s Jason Wilcox rant as harsh punishment proposed

Roy Keane has responded to Lisandro Martinez’s rant about Manchester United director of football Jason Wilcox.

Martinez called out Wilcox and called for more investment in United’s first-team squad following the side’s 2-0 loss away at Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on October 13.

The Argentinian did not hold back in a post-match interview at the Metropolitano, saying he expected more from “upstairs” despite United spending £155million on four summer signings – Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos, Carlos Baleba and Karl Darlow.

What did Lisandro Martinez say about Jason Wilcox?

“I have to control myself a lot, but sometimes it’s a reflection of how our club is at the moment,” Martinez told Amazon Prime.

“We had a fantastic season last season, and now we expect more from the top, from upstairs, to bring in more players to compete because many teams have brought in many players as well.”

When asked if more investment was needed from the club to boost the first team, he added: “Yes, 100 per cent.”

“I expect more from our technical director. I have to be honest. And also, as a player, we have to do more.

“It’s also important to build a strong squad to be ready for this kind of night.”

Martinez has risked a potential fine or even suspension for his comments while defending head coach Michael Carrick.

“He does his best,” he said about Carrick.

“But every season is different. You can’t stay with what you did last season.

“The teams know how you play; they know every detail. If you don’t change, next season is a big problem.

“You start changing, changing, changing managers. But what about other areas?”

Martinez’s rant has divided United’s fanbase, while former captain Roy Keane made his feelings clear on the latest episode of The Overlap.

As Gary Neville read out Martinez’s statement, Keane interrupted, saying: “Let me stop you there… we had a fantastic season last year. There you go, that’s where he’s coming from. He actually thinks he had a fantastic season. Wow, he should be fined two weeks’ wages for saying that.”

United have yet to hand out an official punishment, with Carrick insisting he needed to “find out a bit more” when asked about Martinez’s comments.

“I haven’t seen the interview; I’ve heard about it as the interview was done, but I think it’s a little bit on the emotions of the game as well,” he said. “Coming here and being disappointed not to get something from the game. Straight after a game, for me, isn’t the time to talk about that interview because I haven’t seen it, so I can’t really comment on that.

“But I think it’s important for us to move forward quickly, really. There is a big game on Sunday, and it’s really important that we move forward and stay focused on that. There’s disappointment within the group. I’m very disappointed in certain things, and the boys are as well.”

United return to action away at Leeds United on October 18.
