Blackburn Rovers surrender lead to lose late at West Brom

Andri Gudjohnsen's brace was not enough for anything as Rovers were pegged back and eventually lost late on.

The striker netted goals six and seven of the campaign inside a breathless opening 19 minutes, which also saw Barney Stewart net.

Gudjohnsen's first was a beauty, fired in from 20 yards whilst the second was far closer; poaching inside the box to fire a loose ball in to the net.

Rovers gave away a cheap goal though shortly after their second, allowing Stewart to half the deficit from close range.

The hosts had plenty of possession and territory after that and levelled in second half. Sean McLoughlin was judged to have fouled Jayson Molumby, allowing Isaac Price to score from the penalty spot.

It was the hosts who did look more likely to win and they scored as the game ticked into stoppage time. Myhre heading in from close range to make it a losing return to The Hawthorns for Tony Mowbray.

Rovers were aiming to turn a good week into an excellent one with a positive result at The Hawthorns. Victory would make it three in a row for the first time since November.

Mowbray made just the one alteration his in-form side. A reversion to 4-2-3-1 with Gudjohnsen returning up front; Hayden Carter the man to take his turn and be rotated to the bench.

It was an electric start at The Hawthorns, with goal-mouth action from minute one. Gudjohnsen had already had a sighter as he flicked a header wide before Callum Styles stung the palms of Balazs Toth.

It took just six minutes for the deadlock to be broken. Kristi Montgomery did great to win the ball back in West Brom's third and the ball rolled to Gudjohnsen who lashed a superb strike into the net from 20 yards.

The second followed minutes later, though there was still time for Molumby to somehow hit the post from eight yards when he should have equalised.

That miss proved costly as Gudjohnsen doubled Rovers' advantage. This was one was far more poacher-like as he smashed in from close range after a corner wasn't dealt with.

That put Rovers in command but West Brom soon halved the advantage. Gudjohnsen's wayward pass gifted possession back to the hosts and ended with Stewart scoring from close range.

A worrying ankle injury to Ryoya Morishita saw him limp off. His replacement, Jayden Fevrier, should have done far better when the ball broke to him 15 yards out but he blazed over.

West Brom continued to get into dangerous areas and fly the ball across the box without somehow hitting the target.

Rovers continued to pose a threat on the break and had opportunities with Fevrier and Todd Cantwell but couldn't get the desired contact.

The Baggies eventually levelled and it was hard to argue they didn't deserve it. McLoughlin brought down the excellent Molumby in the box with a clumsy challenge, allowing Price to step up and chip the penalty down the middle.

With 15 minutes to go, it felt like Rovers would be happy to leave with a point despite being pegged back as the hosts poured forward.

They eventually got the winner in the dying minutes. Aune Heggebo was picked out in the box and headed across goal for Myhre to nod in the winner.

It gave Rovers no time to respond and sadly meant a positive week ended in huge frustration.
