The cancellation of the Australian MotoGP Grand Prix provided a brief respite for Jorge Martín and the Aprilia squad after the Spanish rider’s crash during Saturday’s Sprint race at Phillip Island. Martín suffered a fractured radius in his right forearm, but Aprilia’s Paolo Bonora has conveyed a positive outlook regarding the rider’s condition and recovery prospects ahead of the upcoming Malaysian Grand Prix at Sepang.

Martín’s tumble occurred amid a fierce battle with Marc Márquez for the Sprint victory, abruptly ending his race and sending him to the circuit medical centre. Initial assessments confirmed a fracture in Martín’s right forearm, but subsequent examinations yielded more encouraging news. Bonora reported to DAZN, “Despite yesterday’s crash, this morning we saw him doing well. We remain very positive. The goal is to see him back in Sepang.”

However, Bonora carefully refrained from guaranteeing Martín’s participation in Malaysia, emphasizing that the rider’s return depends on the injury’s progression and medical advice. “We don’t yet know in what condition he will come back. We have to evaluate day by day, but we completely trust the medical team and are fully aligned with their guidance. We’re eagerly awaiting his return,” Bonora added.

A significant relief for Aprilia is that Martín’s fracture is non-displaced, meaning it does not require surgical intervention. Bonora explained, “The most important thing is that the fracture is not displaced and that it’s just a matter of time for it to heal naturally.” The team continues to liaise with specialists to determine the best course of action and assess the likelihood of Martín’s comeback as early as next weekend.

The cancellation of the main race on Sunday also impacted the championship dynamics. Martín, declared unfit to race following his crash, would have been sidelined as rivals collected points. The cancellation prevented Marc Márquez from extending his championship lead during the long race at Phillip Island. Bonora acknowledged this aspect, saying, “If it were up to him, Martín might consider himself lucky because he would have lost many more points. On Marco’s side, he wanted to race and test himself, but well, this is always a lottery.”

Despite the sporting stakes, Bonora defended the decision to suspend the race due to hazardous weather conditions. The poor visibility compromised the operation of the medical helicopter, a mandatory safety requirement. “Conditions like those pose extremely high risks, so I believe it was the right choice,” he concluded.

With Martín’s recovery on track and Aprilia’s cautious optimism, all eyes are now on Sepang to witness whether the Spanish rider can make a swift and triumphant return to the MotoGP grid.
