Brought in from Lincoln City in August 2021, the midfielder helped the Reds clinch back-to-back promotions during his time at The Racecourse, climbing from the National League to League One.
He left The Racecourse in January 2025 to sign for Burton Albion but his time with the Brewers was hit by injuries and he was released at the end of last season.
After spending virtually his entire career without having to worry about finding a club, Jones is navigating unfamiliar territory but the 30-year-old is determined to focus on the things he can control.
"It is difficult. I am fortunate that this is the first time I have been in this position," he told That Wrexham Podcast.
"I've gone through all my career and not had to worry about this sort of thing.
"It is a bit daunting, I try to just focus on what I can focus on.
"I'll keep fit and make sure that I'm in good nick for whenever that opportunity does come about.
"In the meantime, my agent keeps me up to date with a few situations but if you start thinking I need this to happen or I need that to happen, it doesn't help anything.
"It's not going to make any difference."
Jones has been working hard behind the scenes to maintain his fitness and sharpness, taking advantage of support offered through the Professional Footballers' Association and former connections within the game.
"I'm feeling good now," added Jones.
"I was getting fit during the back end of last season and the off-season, then I went to the PFA pre-season camp.
"I think I did the first five weeks of that which was really good.
"Everyone's in the same boat and it helped me because that was my first sort of training with a team again.
"I didn't want to go into a club if I'm on trial and I'm a bit rusty because I've not played for a while whereas going there, there's no judgement and you're getting back fit.
"I've been at Crewe doing a bit of training as well because I know the manager there and they've been really good. It was good to get my sharpness back at a proper club."
