As the winter transfer window edges ever closer, Premier League clubs will already be planning their moves. At the same time, some soon-to-be out-of-contract stars can put pen to paper on pre-contract agreements with foreign clubs six months before their deals expire. So, who could your club sign for free?
Last summer, several iconic names saw their contracts expire, with Liverpool legends Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah moving on for free. The pair joined Tottenham and Besiktas, respectively, while their now-former Reds team-mate Ibrahima Konaté joined Real Madrid.
Elsewhere, Casemiro joined Inter Miami after his Manchester United contract expired, while Manchester City icons John Stones and Bernardo Silva traded life in Manchester for European adventures at Inter and Real.
So, who are the most valuable players Premier League clubs may be able to snap up without shelling out a fortune in the summer of 2027?
Lisandro Martínez (Manchester United)
The United centre-back hit the headlines for his outburst at the club’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, earlier this week, and it appears he could be set to leave Old Trafford.
It is widely reported that the Argentinian wants to leave when his contract expires in June 2027, despite the defender having the option to extend it until 2028. Martínez would likely prefer a move to Spain and has previously been linked with Atlético Madrid.
As reported by Transfermarkt, he is valued at around £38.1million, and moving on for free would be a huge blow to United’s finances, given they spent £57million on the South American when he joined from Ajax in 2022.
Yasin Ayari (Brighton & Hove Albion)
Ayari has been an important cog in Fabian Hürzeler’s machine since arriving from AIK in 2023. The Swedish international has netted seven times and provided four assists in 84 appearances for the Seagulls and is reportedly being considered by European giants AC Milan. Talks are said to be ongoing over a new Brighton contract, but no agreement has been reached yet.
Christian Pulisic (AC Milan)
A familiar name to Premier League fans due to his stint at Chelsea, Pulisic will no doubt be a sought-after commodity next summer. The 28-year-old is currently plying his trade in Italy with AC Milan but has struggled with injuries in recent times, limiting him to just three Serie A appearances under new head coach Ruben Amorim.
Brahim Díaz (Real Madrid)
The Real Madrid winger has already donned the colours of Manchester City, AC Milan and Los Blancos during his career, but he may be set to move on again next summer. The Spain-born Morocco international has featured just four times since José Mourinho took the reins at the Santiago Bernabéu and is unlikely to be more than a squad player, given the attacking talent at the Portuguese manager’s disposal. Signing Díaz would be smart business for several Premier League clubs, given his experience in the Champions League.
Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United)
A man who needs no introduction, the United captain was consistently linked with a move to Saudi Arabia last summer but ultimately chose to remain at Old Trafford. He might be regretting his decision, given United’s torrid start to the season, with the Portuguese likely to have several offers on the table next summer. It is unclear whether United will offer him a further extension to keep the 32-year-old at the club beyond June 2027.
Jean-Philippe Mateta (Crystal Palace)
Mateta has seemingly been close to leaving Palace twice in recent windows, with proposed moves to both Nottingham Forest and AC Milan falling through. The 29-year-old France international has not played since the Eagles’ opening-day defeat to Everton. It is widely reported that Mateta will leave Selhurst Park next summer rather than extend his stay in south London.
In August, the player argued that the remainder of his Crystal Palace deal was invalid and has since taken the case to FIFA.
Chris Richards (Crystal Palace)
Also of Palace, Richards has played an integral part in the club’s success over the past two seasons, forming part of the starting XI in the 2025 FA Cup final while being an unused substitute in the 2026 Conference League final.
The 26-year-old American centre-back reportedly opened talks over a new contract in the spring, although there is no confirmation that an agreement has been reached, meaning the defender could leave for free next summer.
João Félix (Al-Nassr)
Félix has become a footballing nomad in recent seasons. Since joining Chelsea on loan from Atlético Madrid in 2023, the Portuguese’s career has been chaotic, to say the least. Félix spent the 2023/24 campaign on loan at Barcelona from Atlético before signing a permanent deal at Chelsea that summer. But he did not last long at Stamford Bridge and was loaned to AC Milan in February 2025 before being sold to Saudi Arabia’s Al-Nassr in the summer of 2025.
Despite a strong return of 30 goals and 23 assists in 57 appearances for the Riyadh club, Félix’s deal has less than a year left to run, meaning he could be available for yet another move next summer. Félix reportedly wants to return to Barcelona, although Al-Nassr president Ahmed Al-Sultan wants to activate the automatic extension clause in the player’s deal to keep him for another season.
