The BYU-Notre Dame game wasn’t the only one this weekend to end in controversy.
The Florida State Seminoles surprised many by taking No. 3-ranked Miami to overtime. They ultimately fell 43-35 in double OT, but an argument could be made that FSU was robbed on the final play of the game.
Seminoles QB Ashton Daniels seemingly connected with Micahi Danzy on a 36-yard touchdown to give them the lead. But Xavier Chaplin was flagged for holding, wiping out the long TD and moving Florida State back an extra 10 yards.
Daniels’ next Hail Mary pass was intercepted in the end zone, though many argued video replay showed it was actually an FSU touchdown as Duce Robinson came down with the ball before having it ripped away by Bryce Fitzgerald on the ground.
Both plays cost Florida State an upset win over an AP top-five team, and head coach Mike Norvell was so enraged by the two calls that he actually reached out to speak with the head of officiating for the ACC to discuss his grievances.
“You have the holding call, which was an absolute joke,” Norvell told reporters on Monday. “I called and talked to Gary Patterson, the head of officials. I have not heard his final review from it. I’ve got a lot of respect for the job that everybody has. You go through the course of that game, the same thing happened a few plays earlier that was not called. But in that moment, that play, it’s a shame. It really is.
“And we had to go convert the two-point play. But for those kids to not be able to finish the game on the field in that moment, it’s really disappointing. A lot of judgment calls in all things, but that was bad. I haven’t gotten the final response from them, but if it’s anything less than what I said, it tells me everything I need to know.”
While Norvell’s complaint is unlikely to change anything, he’s presumably hoping to hear Patterson admit his officiating crew made a mistake.
Officials have been under fire in both the NFL and college football this season for the high number of missed or egregious calls that have impacted the results of several games.
