Rio Ferdinand has become embroiled in a heated exchange with a Manchester United content creator amid growing frustration surrounding the club’s ownership.
The former England international remains one of United’s greatest defenders, having established himself as a cornerstone of Sir Alex Ferguson’s legendary side.
Ferdinand joined from Leeds United in 2002 and spent 12 years at Old Trafford, winning six Premier League titles and the Champions League in 2008.
He captained United during their famous European triumph against Chelsea in Moscow, cementing his status among the club’s most celebrated figures.
Since retiring, Ferdinand has remained closely involved in football through punditry, broadcasting and his own media platforms.
However, his commentary on United’s ongoing struggles has attracted criticism from some supporters who believe he has been too reluctant to challenge the club’s ownership.
Some fans have questioned whether maintaining a positive relationship with United influences his public stance, although there is no evidence establishing that connection.
The debate has intensified following United’s disastrous start to the season, with Michael Carrick winning just twice in nine matches.
Earlier this week, Lisandro Martinez publicly criticised United’s hierarchy following their defeat against Atletico Madrid, before subsequently apologising.
Now, Ferdinand’s response to one frustrated supporter has sparked another controversy.
Writing underneath Ferdinand’s Instagram post praising Michael Carrick, Manchester United content creator Saeed, known online as SaeedTV, challenged the former defender.
“Stop yapping and call out the owners!” he wrote.
Ferdinand responded directly through his verified Instagram account:
“stop yapping and pick up ya tits, ya out a breath typing !!”
The remark appeared to mock the supporter’s physique rather than address his criticism of United’s ownership.
The exchange took place beneath a post featuring Carrick, accompanied by his quotes in today’s press conference.
Ferdinand’s response can reasonably be interpreted as fat-shaming, although the former defender has not publicly clarified his intentions in the material available.
The incident highlights the increasingly hostile debate surrounding United’s direction, with supporters demanding greater accountability from those associated with the club.
