According to reports in the German media, Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany is suffering from a bout of illness, which jeopardizes his participation against Arsenal FC in the Champions League this week. Assistant coach Aaron Danks may be called to take over in case the Belgian cannot make the touchline.
According to Tz, the situation looks grim (via @iMiaSanMia):
It’s still unclear whether Vincent Kompany will actively coach the team on the sideline against Arsenal on Wednesday, or take his seat on the bench as he did against Leipzig. The coach is currently struggling with the flu, which is having a slight impact on his old scar tissue. Kompany is currently having problems climbing stairs and standing for extended periods. If the coach is not fit in time, assistant Aaron Danks will primarily take charge in the coaching zone on Wednesday.
Bild confirmed that Kompany missed training, but the club expects him to be fit in time (via @iMiaSanMia):
Assistant coach Aaron Danks was in charge of today’s closed training session. Vincent Kompany was not there, but Bayern expect him to be available against Arsenal. The Belgian coach is also determined to be with his team on Wednesday.
This comes after reports that the coach was battling a hip issue during the 6-1 win over RB Leipzig in the weekend. The situation compounds the misery for FC Bayern, who already have to deal with losing Michael Olise for one of the biggest games of the Champions League league phase.
Last year, Kompany was forced to sit out the opening leg against PSG in the semi-final due to yellow card accumulation. Bayern Munich eventually lost that game 4-5. With all these factors working against the team right now, defeating the Gunners seems like a Herculean task at the moment.
