When Napoli need him, Scott McTominay steps up to the mantle.
McTominay, alongside former Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund, started Napoli’s derby clash against local rivals Roma knowing a win could take them into the top six of Serie A.
Frank Anguissa’s overhead kick put Napoli ahead before McTominay’s header doubled the home side’s lead.
Quickfire goals from Matias Soule and Leonardo Balerdi for Roma brought the game level, before Scott McTominay stepped up to net, what looked to be, the game’s winner.
Balerdi would stop Napoli in their tracks, however, with an 89th minute equalizer to ensure that the points were shared.
The Italian media have now been reacting to McTominay’s performance before they look towards Napoli’s game against Monza next Wednesday.
Calcio Mercato handed the Scottish international a 8/10, stating: “The tenacity with which he slammed the ball into the net for the 2-0 match mirrored his performance.
“He fought like a lion and even found the 3-2: only a final defensive lapse from his teammates deprived him of the role of hero of the night.”
TuttoSport also heaped praise on the midfielder, saying: “He scored two in a row, confirming himself as a player in a tailcoat, for great evenings – and also confirming that he was back to great levels after his heart problems.”
The False 9, meanwhile, handed McTominay a 9/10, and said: “Two goals, a back-post header and a low strike from distance that looked like the winner. Napoli’s best player by a clear margin.”
From the reaction of Italian outlets across the globe, it is clear to see: McTominay’s performance has been well received. Returning to playing after heart surgery, the Scottish international may be crucial for Napoli in the rest of the season.
Napoli will have the opportunity to put the disappointment of their draw with Roma behind them on Wednesday evening against Monza.
McTominay’s performance in that game could once again be imperative as the Serie A giants look to mount their own rise up the league table after a shaky start to the season.
