It’s great to see Martin O’Neill at his energised best because it bodes well for Celtic.
Even with Celtic putting seven goals past Hearts, you would have thought O’Neill would have taken it easy and not had any complaints; well, think again!
Celtic put seven goals past Hearts, but were 4-0 up when the Jambos scored their only goal of the game, as O’Neill explained that he ‘apologised’ to the fourth official after complaining about how the opposition’s goal came about.
Hearts had a throw-in, with O’Neill telling his post-match press conference that they were allowed to take that ’20 yards further up the field’, and it didn’t sit well with him because it led to Laurent Mendy scoring.
Yang, Jota and others are all in contention too…
That throw-in Hearts took ended up being taken from inside Celtic’s half; it allowed Josh McPake to run down the flank, put a cross into the box, which was headed away back to a Hearts player.
Eventually, the ball fell to Mendy on the edge of the penalty area, and he whipped the ball past Viljami Sinisalo into the bottom corner.
Reporter: “After the Hearts goal, you seem quite annoyed at the fourth official.”
O’Neill: “I have apologised to the fourth official because I thought the referee allowed the ball to be taken 20 yards further up the field. That’s the problem with the multi balls.
“When the multi balls don’t go in your favour. Then you aren’t happy. When they go in your favour, you don’t say a word. And they scored a goal from that. I just thought it was a rather large distance. I am going to check it again.
“But it was a large distance, and I have apologised to the fourth official.”
