Enda McGinley issues Darragh Canavan injury update after Tyrone star misses county final draw with Edendork

Darren McCurry's stunning two-pointer earned Edendork a replay, but his county colleague played no part in Sunday's clash in Omagh

Enda McGinley has all but ruled Darragh Canavan out of Friday’s Tyrone SFC final replay against Edendork amid a further injury setback for the Tyrone star.

Canavan, who missed the majority of Tyrone’s Championship season with a hip flexor injury had been gradually working his way back to fitness in recent weeks, scoring three points in the semi-final win over 2025 champions Loughmacrory.

However, a knee injury ruled him out of Sunday’s clash in Omagh with Darren McCurry’s dramatic last-gasp two-pointer forcing a replay.

Speaking after the game, McGinley said the injury is likely to keep his star forward sidelined for Friday’s replay as well.

“Unfortunately, it was last Sunday, he picked up a knee injury,” McGinley said of Canavan’s injury.

“So, you're always hoping for a miracle, but it's not happening.

“I can't imagine he'll be any better this week. Obviously, it was a blow to the squad and to the group.

“But it is what it is. You've got a squad for a reason. It's up to the next man to come in and to do well. That'll be the same state the next day.”

McGinley was able to get more minutes into the legs of Joe Oguz and Ruairi Canavan and both players could feature more prominently in the replay.

“Things need managing. Players will pick up tweaks and further tweaks and things like that. So, we are just always trying to manage that as best we can,” added the Errigal boss.

“Great to have them (Oguz and Canavan) to come on, absolutely. But yeah, again, look, it's the panel. Now, with a five-day turnaround, it's recovery, it's checking where the bodies are.

“A couple of other boys have picked up knocks. So, it'll be seeing where everybody's at come Wednesday and then starting to make a plan from there.”

In an ideal world, McGinley would be already making plans for the Ulster Club series and a meeting with Down champions Clonduff.

However, McCurry’s brilliant two-pointer ensured that the sides will return to O’Neills Healy Park on Friday night with St Malachy’s still in with a shout of winning their first-ever senior county title.

McCurry’s score was initially ruled out by referee Paul Gallagher for an apparent breach.

However, after protests from Edendork, he consulted with his linesman and discovered that Correy Bell had been down receiving treatment and allowed the equalising score to stand.

Although frustrated that his side failed to hold on to their lead in stoppage-time, McGinley hailed McCurry’s classy score and warned his team that the Tyrone veteran will be keen to have a greater impact in the replay after being well marshalled by Cormac Quinn on Sunday.

“He's a phenomenal player,” McGinley said of McCurry.

“He just has such craft and such ability. Those types of things are the things that don't sit comfortably tonight because you know that he had a quieter game than what he usually has, and he very rarely ever has two quiet tests in a row.

“So, that's the challenge. You can only expect that that's going to work better for them the next day, and we need to try and somehow find areas that we can measure up as well.”
