Viktor Gyokeres is comfortably the most criticised player at Arsenal.
The Swede was brought in by Andrea Berta last summer to solve the Gunners’ goalscoring woes. He was viewed by many as the missing piece in the puzzle.
Gyokeres scored over 20 goals for Arsenal in his debut season and helped Arsenal win the Premier League title. That’s not bad at all, but it’s nowhere near the numbers he produced when he was at Sporting.
That has led to criticism from a large section of the Arsenal fan base, but many supporters also feel Gyokeres is not the real problem. Mikel Arteta may have just echoed that opinion.

Viktor Gyokeres has had a tough start to the new season.
The former Sporting man has played just 56 minutes of football in the Premier League so far. His three starts have come in the Champions League and the Carabao Cup.
Gyokeres is yet to score a goal this term, but Arteta believes he could easily have scored a hat-trick against Lille on Tuesday night had his teammates found him inside the box.
The Sweden international was available for tap-ins on multiple occasions, but Arsenal’s cut-backs and crosses were never towards him.
Arteta said, as per Arsenal.com: “The other day, he had some very good moments; three or four times he’s been in front of goal with no keeper, and the ball should arrive to him, and it doesn’t. Then maybe we are talking about something else.
“But these are the strikers. It’s very small margins – scoring or not scoring changes the narrative. We should know the perception of how much he can help the team.”
When asked if Gyokeres is lacking confidence, he replied: “That’s a very personal question. I think what he transmits is an incredible will, determination and work rate to improve and help the team; that’s it.
“That’s Viktor every single day, regardless of his position, whether he scores a goal or not, and that’s why he’s always an option to play.”
Gyokeres is not everybody’s cup of tea, and there are definitely things that need serious improvement. But it’s not all his fault.
Many Arsenal fans have often complained that the Swede’s runs are ignored and he rarely ever receives balls to his feet inside the box in shooting positions.
The game against Lille was a perfect example of that, and Arteta has all but agreed with that assessment while speaking about his number 14.
However, Gyokeres needs to make do with whatever service he gets and find a way to score goals. That, as things stand, is the only way to save his Arsenal career.
