Australia’s triple World Cup-winning hero Glenn Maxwell has announced his retirement from international cricket. Popularly known as ‘The Big Show’, Maxwell leaves the game as one of the most destructive white-ball cricketers of his generation.

Maxwell’s international career can be measured through more than runs and wickets. His numbers reveal a batter who combined remarkable scoring speed with the ability to contribute across all three formats. Following his retirement from international cricket, the Australian all-rounder’s statistics offer a clear picture of the impact he made during his time in the national team.

Maxwell played 286 international matches for Australia, scoring 7,226 runs and taking 136 wickets. His record includes 10 international centuries, 35 half-centuries and more than 500 boundaries across Tests, ODIs and T20Is.

Glenn Maxwell’s international batting stats

The following table summarises Maxwell’s batting record across formats:

Format Matches Runs Average Strike Rate Highest Score 100s 50s
Tests 7 339 26.08 59.47 104 1 0
ODIs 149 3,990 33.81 126.71 201* 4 23
T20Is 130 2,897 28.97 154.42 145* 5 12
Total 286 7,226 – – – 10 35

His numbers underline his preference for attacking cricket, particularly in limited-overs formats. Maxwell’s ODI strike rate of 126.71 and T20I strike rate above 154 show how quickly he could change the scoring rate. He also demonstrated adaptability in Tests, where his highest score was 104 against India.

Maxwell’s ODI record: Runs, centuries and sixes

Maxwell played 149 ODIs for Australia, scoring 3,990 runs in 136 innings. He averaged 33.81 and registered four centuries and 23 half-centuries.

One of the most striking aspects of his ODI record is his boundary-hitting ability. He struck 382 fours and 155 sixes, making him a valuable middle-order option who could accelerate an innings without needing a long period to settle.

His highest ODI score was 201 not out. He also recorded a bowling best of 4/40, demonstrating his usefulness as a part-time off-spinner. Across the format, Maxwell claimed 77 wickets and took 91 catches.

T20I Stats: Maxwell’s most explosive format

T20 internationals brought out Maxwell’s aggressive approach most consistently. In 130 matches, he scored 2,897 runs at an average of 28.97 and a strike rate of 154.42.

His five T20I centuries place him among the format’s leading century-makers. India’s Rohit Sharma is the other player to have reached five men’s T20I hundreds, according to reports following Maxwell’s retirement.

Maxwell’s highest T20I score was an unbeaten 145 against Sri Lanka in 2016. He struck 243 fours and 150 sixes in the format, highlighting his ability to find boundaries against both pace and spin.

His T20I bowling figures were also significant: 51 wickets, with best figures of 3/10. That combination of aggressive batting and useful off-spin made him a genuine all-round option rather than simply a specialist batter.

Maxwell’s performance in Test Cricket: A smaller but notable tecord

Maxwell’s Test career was considerably shorter than his white-ball journey. He played seven matches, scored 339 runs and averaged 26.08. His sole Test century was 104, while his best bowling figures were 4/127.

He also took eight Test wickets, giving him 136 wickets across all international formats when combined with his ODI and T20I totals.

Maxwell’s international bowling and fielding stats

Maxwell’s contributions extended beyond his batting. His international bowling record features 77 ODI wickets, 51 T20I wickets and eight Test wickets.

Format Wickets Best Bowling Catches
Tests 8 4/127 5
ODIs 77 4/40 91
T20Is 51 3/10 62
Total 136 – 158

Maxwell’s 158 catches across international cricket further demonstrate his value in the field. His numbers show the full range of his contribution: quick runs, crucial overs and dependable fielding.
