For years, the traditional opening stages of major soccer tournaments have followed a familiar script: Group-stage games, a handful of predictable mismatches and the gradual build toward the heavyweight encounters that everyone really wants to see.

That approach is changing. From UEFA’s revamped Champions League (now in its third year) to the significant restructuring of the 2027 CONCACAF Gold Cup, the game’s governing bodies are rethinking how their competitions begin with a common objective: Get the biggest teams playing more meaningful games against one another earlier in the tournament.

There are differences between the Champions League and Gold Cup approaches. Nonetheless, both are responding to the same challenge: Making the opening stage feel like an essential part of the tournament rather than an obstacle to the games that really matter. The traditional group stage was designed around simplicity and familiarity. Instead, these newer models are designed around variety, competitive incentives and commercial appeal.

Overall, the thinking is straightforward. Why make fans wait until the knockout rounds to see the most compelling matches when those games can become part of the opening act?

The most prominent example is the Champions League, which introduced its expanded league-phase format in the 2024-25 season. Gone was the familiar arrangement of 32 clubs divided into eight groups of four, with each team playing three opponents twice. In its place came a 36-team competition in which every club plays eight different opponents – four at home and four away – in one overarching league table.

The change was designed to produce more variety, more competitive balance and, crucially, more heavyweight encounters during the fall. That means supporters can see some of Europe’s biggest clubs take on each other ahead of the knockout stage. It also creates a more compelling competitive landscape, with every result affecting a shared table.

There is also considerably more at stake throughout the opening phase. The top eight teams qualify directly to the round of 16, while clubs finishing between ninth and 24th enter a two-legged playoff. Those finishing 25th or lower are eliminated. As a result, the league phase is not simply an extended qualifying exercise. A team’s position can determine whether it enjoys a direct route to the last-16.

UEFA’s experiment has now provided a template that other competitions are beginning to examine, although not necessarily an exact replica. CONCACAF announced on Thursday that next summer’s Gold Cup would introduce a radically different group-stage structure, replacing its traditional four groups of four teams with two groups of eight.

“The Gold Cup is our region’s premier men’s national team competition, and we are really excited about what this new format will bring to the tournament’s Group Stage,” said CONCACAF President Victor Montagliani. “Our fans want to see the best teams in our region compete against each other, and this format will create more opportunities for those matchups to happen earlier in the competition.”

The tournament will retain its 16-team field, but the new arrangement means every team will play four group-stage matches against four different opponents, rather than just three matches. The eight teams in each group will be divided into four ranking bands. A predetermined fixture matrix will establish the matchups, creating a balanced schedule across the rankings. The top four teams from each group will advance to the quarterfinals, followed by the semifinals and final.

It is a significant departure from the previous structure, where the top two teams from each of four groups advanced to the knockout round. More importantly, CONCACAF said the new format will create opportunities for the region’s best national teams to meet earlier, rather than allowing the opening rounds to be dominated by matchups between heavily mismatched opponents.

For a competition featuring traditional regional powers such as the United States and Mexico, that is an important consideration. The previous format could produce opening-round schedules in which the strongest teams faced opponents with considerably fewer resources and international pedigree. The days of treating the opening rounds as merely a warm-up for the bigger games are increasingly numbered.

“At the same time, every match will matter, with teams facing a balanced mix of opponents and competing for a place in the knockout rounds. We believe this will make for a more competitive and exciting Gold Cup from the very first match through to the final,” Montagliani added.

The new format also guarantees every participating nation an additional game, increasing the tournament’s overall competitive offering for TV audiences. The 2027 Gold Cup will run from June 17 to July 11, with the official draw scheduled for April 8. Saudi Arabia will join the 15 CONCACAF nations as an invited guest team.
