Steeton left frustrated after controversial penalty appeal

After a bright first half display that allowed the Chevvies to lead at the interval, a drop in performance in the second allowed their visitors to turn the game on its head and return to Merseyside with all three points.

And it wasn’t just the second-half performance that left manager Roy Mason ruing the evening’s events with as many as four of his side forced off injured throughout the contest.

The Chevrons began on the front foot as they looked to respond to the weekend’s agonising last minute loss on the road.

They thought they had achieved just that with four minutes on the clock as Andy Briggs broke the offside trap and placed a shot across the face of goal.

Despite the initial strike appearing to be creeping inside the far post, Adam Terrelonge’s touch to take it over the line was adjudged to have been offside and the linesman’s flag ruled out the goal.

With the game being an end-to-end affair in the opening exchanges, it would be a set-piece that saw Maghull break the deadlock against the run of play midway through the half.

From a corner, Nathan Peet was allowed a free run and subsequently a free header to turn the ball home and give his side the lead.

Losing Josh Coe to an ankle injury shortly after, this did not hamper the Steeton efforts as they found both an equaliser and a goal to take the lead themselves in the half’s closing stages.

From a corner, Steeton regained possession after an initial clearance and sent the ball out wide to Macca Smith.

His delivery from deep dropped onto the head of Briggs at near post, his header creeping into the bottom corner from close range.

Then as the half-time whistle was about to be blown a long punt forward from Brad Emmerson in the Steeton goal was flicked on by Briggs into the path of Terrelonge.

Controlling the ball with a lovely first touch, the attacker’s three-month wait for a goal came to an end as he fired home much to both his joy and relief.

Looking to build on this momentum, the second half felt lacklustre from a Steeton perspective and the title favourites in Maghull took full advantage.

They found an equaliser shortly after the restart as they again took advantage of the home side’s set-piece fragilities.

An in-swinging corner struck the post and with those in green slow to react, Zak Riley flung his head unchallenged at the ball from a yard out to level up the scoreboard once more.

Now with momentum fully swung back in their favour, the winning goal followed on the hour mark and a goal that was presented on a silver platter by Steeton.

Just after Macca Smith was forced off, miscommunication led to confusion at the back between skipper Arley Barnes and Emmerson.

Sam Smith took hold of the loose ball and walked it to the goal line before cheekily tapping into the empty net.

Steeton rightfully felt that a penalty to bring them back level was wrongly denied.

With a Maghull defenders’ arms in the air in a pose similar to that of a Subbuteo goalkeeper, a strike struck one of the raised limbs.

The referee and linesman somehow missed the handball and allowed play to continue to the fury of those in green.

Steeton’s night would end further soured with injuries finishing the evenings of both Terrelonge and Nathan Storton.
