ESPN proposes lopsided trade between Panthers, Eagles

We are now less than three weeks away from the NFL trade deadline. And in a rare twist of fate, the Carolina Panthers appear to be in position to act as buyers rather than sellers.

If there's one position where the reigning NFC South champs need help the most, it's cornerback—where boundary starters Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson are both on injured reserve.

To address this rather sizable roster hole, Bill Barnwell at ESPN has a pretty interesting idea. He proposes a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles, sending over tight end Ja'Tavion Sanders and a fifth-round draft pick in exchange for corner Riq Woolen and a sixth.

Barnwell writes:

It also wouldn't cost Carolina much. Woolen will make just $840,000 plus incentives over the remainder of the season. The Panthers would be giving up a swap of Day 3 picks and a player buried on their depth chart in Sanders, who has been a healthy scratch throughout the 2026 season. Sanders had 33 catches for 342 yards and a touchdown as a rookie in 2024, but he didn't build on that performance in 2025 and hasn't even seen the field in 2026.

Who says no? Well, Philadelphia, probably.

If the Eagles considered a trade like this, it would come as a shock—even with their season going down the tubes. General manager Howie Roseman might be able to get a much better return for Woolen, a capable starter at one of the most important positions in the sport.

Moreover, the 27-year-old Woolen is still in his prime and has top-end size and athleticism. Trading him away for Sanders, who was nearly cut before the regular season and hasn't been active on a game day since, doesn't seem like a wise move.

It never hurts to make a phone call, though. Woolen's length and coverage chops would give Panthers defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero more room to play less zone defense and mix up his back end lineups a lot more.
