The Light Blues held a 2-1 lead heading into the latter stages of the action when Dan Neil slipped to allow Callum Jones the opportunity to equalise for the hosts.
The manager had made just the one personnel change with Badredine Bouanani replacing striker Kevin Kelsy but he tweaked the setup to accommodate Minsu-Kim playing in a more central role.
Bouanani would score for the club but Boyd was left unconvinced in the end that the changes worked for Gers.
And he also questioned the decision-making from the players to pass the ball about at the back which cost them Bradley Fink's opener.
"(Changes) didn't quite work but I thought it was working, I thought Bouanani and Minsu-Kim when Derek took them off the two had started to connect," Boyd told the Scottish Sun.
"Minsu-Kim was getting into that area, was asking questions of Dundee defensively. I get Bouanani hasn't played a lot of football and maybe that was the reason for changing it but I don't think the substitutions when they came on - Kevin Kelsy, Findlay Curtis - had the same impact that Derek would have been looking for.
"You go back to the goal, once (Manny) Fernandez doesn't give it to Dujon Sterling it has to go to (Ivor) Pandur and then go long. There's no point in these little passes because Dundee had figured it out and were on the press.
"They'd got Rangers a couple of times in the first-half so I don't understand why you'd want to take touch, touch, touch, touch, invite a team onto you."
