Rangers underwent a major squad overhaul during a frantic summer transfer window, with a sweeping transition taking place across both the senior and academy ranks.

The Ibrox club saw high-profile permanent departures, including the likes of Oliver Antman and goalkeeper Jack Butland, while several others secured temporary departures away from Glasgow. Players such as Thelo Aasgaard departed on loan in search of regular minutes and potential long-term exits, but for the club’s rising academy stars, the objective is vastly different.

Young prospects like Max Cameron have taken the loan route to gain vital first-team experience in senior football before returning to Auchenhowie ready to stake a claim for a permanent first-team berth.

Cameron’s move materialised through Rangers’ official co-operation agreement with Alloa Athletic – an initiative specifically designed to accelerate youth development. The 17-year-old winger has been making rapid strides with the Wasps, recently delivering a standout Man of the Match display in a victory over East Fife, where his explosive run earned a corner that he subsequently delivered for Owen Foster to head home the opener.

Max Cameron reveals what Rangers mates Calum Adamson and Lewis Stewart told him about Alloa Athletic

However, before committing to his spell away from Ibrox, the teenager sought out fellow Rangers prospects Calum Adamson and Lewis Stewart, both of whom enjoyed successful stints with Alloa through the same agreement last term. Upon learning that Cameron was considering making the exact same transition into senior football, his two teammates made a direct appeal to help him make up his mind.

Cameron said, via the Alloa Advertiser: “I spoke to them before I came and they said it was the best place for me to go and that really pushed me on to come to Alloa. They said the manager [Andy Graham] was really good, the boys were really good, they play a good style of football, similar to how we play at Rangers, and it was just good for me to go and get better.”

The Scotland Under-19 international emphasised that moving out of youth football into the physical demands of Scottish League One has proven essential for his growth as an attacker. Despite suffering a brief setback when he temporarily lost his starting place earlier in the campaign, Cameron praised the mental resilience required to earn his spot back without frustration.

The Rangers loanee said: “I started really well and then came out of the squad. It was hard, but I didn’t moan. I didn’t kick up about it. I just kept working hard and working my way back into the squad, and performances like that [against East Fife] definitely help.

“I’m really enjoying it, a lot better than playing at 19s football. I think it’s a lot better playing against men, definitely will improve me a lot more. I thought it was time for me to get out of my comfort zone and do something that I’ve not done before.”

With Cameron flourishing on the left flank at Alloa, where Kyle Glasgow is also turning heads, coaches at Auchenhowie will be monitoring his progress closely as he builds a strong argument for his eventual return to the Ibrox first-team setup.
