Washington Offense Overcomes Turnovers in Ironically Impressive Win

The Washington Huskies' offense was good for a little bit of everything in their 38-26 road victory over Purdue.

If someone told you that the Washington Huskies were going on the road to Purdue on a three-game losing streak, turned the ball over five times, four of them on their own side of the field, you would probably chalk that up as a loss for Jedd Fisch's team. On the other hand, if someone said the UW offense, led by backup quarterback Elijah Brown and a battered backfield, would put up 38 points, it would be fair to assume Washington would have scored enough to leave West Lafayette with a win.

Somehow, both of those happened, and the Huskies walked away victorious.

After throwing an interception on the first play from scrimmage, the Washington offense responded with its best all-around performance of the season. Brown showed great resilience despite throwing three picks, as the Stanford transfer completed 21 of his 27 passes for 302 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Fisch's passing game wasn't the only aspect of the offense that had a coming-out party, as the Huskies rushed for a season-high 186 yards. After putting up a miserable -3 yards on the ground against Iowa, the hobbled running back room made its presence felt against the Boilermakers. Veteran transfer Trey Cooley led the charge, taking eight carries for 113 yards, highlighted by an explosive 53-yard touchdown run that helped seal the game in the fourth quarter.

Freshman Brain Bonner Jr. also had a career night, finding the end zone twice, once on the ground and the other coming on a 26-yard screen pass in the second quarter. The unsung hero of the game was the offensive line, a unit that has taken heavy criticism throughout the season after entering the year with Joe Moore Award hopes, but the group up front gave up just two sacks to the Boilermakers.

What seemed like a game that was shaping up to be the final straw for a struggling offensive unit turned out to be a promising sign heading into the bye week. With starting quarterback Demond Williams Jr.'s health still up in the air, Fisch will have a tough decision to make when the Huskies head to Lincoln to take on Nebraska on Halloween.
