Leicester City recorded a much-needed win against Doncaster Rovers at the weekend to relieve some of the pressure on Russell Martin’s shoulders.
Tensions were high in the King Power Stadium beforehand but goals from John Lundstram and Kamari Doyle saw Foxes fans leave feeling happy and with hope that things could turn for the better.
I was one of those inside the ground and there was one big change Martin made that I noticed.
One of the biggest changes I spotted from the stands Martin’s set up from the first whistle.
Firstly, the formation. The 4-2-3-1 has been his choice for games but this time around, he opted to go for a 3-4-3. Conceding goals has been a huge problem and having that extra layer of protection at the back certainly helped. Warren O’Hora’s own goal was disappointing but the Foxes were rarely troubled by Doncaster and were aided by this little change.
Secondly, and perhaps the biggest alteration, is the style of football. Chants of ‘sideways and backwards, everywhere we go’ have been a familiar theme throughout but there was far less of that. There were a lot more direct passes and passes with purpose.

Yes, the Foxes may have had the majority of the ball, but their 53.9 per cent is a big drop compared to the 60s and 70s we have seen in other games.
That performance proves that Martin can change things when he wants to and it proved to be the correct call as Leicester went on to win.
One win is all it is though and it will all be in vain if they drop points against Bromley on Tuesday. We’ve seen what can happen, now it’s about getting a run of wins together and climbing up the table.
