Bangladesh National Cricket Team fast bowler Hasan Mahmud delivered a stunning performance against the West Indies National Cricket Team in the second Test at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium in Sylhet. Hasan Mahmud picked up six wickets for 90 runs in 24 overs, helping Bangladesh bowl out the West Indies for 356 after they had reached a strong position of 264/4.

With this performance, Mahmud became the first Bangladesh fast bowler to take five five-wicket hauls in Test cricket, surpassing Shahadat Hossain, who achieved the feat four times.

Hasan Mahmud breaks Shahadat Hossain's record with historic five-wicket haul against West Indies

The six-wicket haul was Hasan Mahmud’s fifth five-wicket performance in Test cricket and his first on home soil. The fast bowler made his Test debut for Bangladesh in 2024 and has now taken 59 wickets in 19 Tests at an average of 27.69. Out of his 59 wickets, 20 have come in eight home Tests.

Before the Sylhet heroics, Mahmud had already taken five wickets in an innings against Pakistan in Rawalpindi in 2024, India in Chennai in 2024, Australia in Darwin in 2026, and Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi in 2026. And the latest spell made Mahmud the first Bangladesh fast bowler to take five five-wicket hauls in Tests.

He surpassed the former Bangladesh pacer Shahadat Hossain, who had four five-wicket hauls, while Robiul Islam achieved the feat twice. Among the current Bangladesh fast bowlers, Nahid Rana has also taken two five-wicket hauls, but he is far behind Mahmud.

Litton Das helps Mahmud create another record

Mahmud's performance has seen an interesting moment involving Bangladesh wicketkeeper Litton Das. The pacer had recently taken a hat-trick against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi, but he missed another chance against the West Indies in Sylhet.

Joshua Bishop faced Mahmud's hat-trick delivery and was given out LBW by umpire Asif Yaqoob. However, Bishop successfully overturned the decision after taking a DRS review.

Mahmud later dropped Bishop off his own bowling but eventually dismissed him with the help of a brilliant stumping by Litton Das.

The wicketkeeper came close to the stumps, and the plan worked perfectly. With this dismissal, Mahmud became the first Bangladesh fast bowler to take a Test wicket through a stumping.

Hasan Mahmud opens up on Shanto's smart plan that led to Joshua Bishop's dismissal

Hasan said about Bishop’s dismissal after the game, as quoted by Cricbuzz: “At that time, the batsman (Jangoo) was actually playing by stepping out. Later, Shanto Bhai (captain) told me that if he (Litton) kept up to the stumps, maybe the batter wouldn't move his feet so much and his shot-making would also decrease a little.

Then I said to Dada (Litton), If you are comfortable, then of course we will go according to your plan. Later, he came up to the stumps, and a good plan was executed.”

Virat Kohli's wicket remains special for Mahmud

Mahmud also explained that taking five wickets at home was a special moment for him. He wants to keep improving and work harder to achieve more success in international cricket.

The Bangladesh fast bowler also revealed that dismissing India's star batter Virat Kohli remains one of the most special wickets of his career.

The fast bowler added, “Getting five wickets at home is always very special for me. I keep things very simple. But I will definitely try harder to get ahead.”
