Controversial UFC champion declares: ‘Take the belt, it’s not for me’

Oliveira will defend the ‘Baddest Motherf*****’ strap against Diego Lopes in December, after his controversial title win in March

Charles Oliveira has admitted he is not bothered about holding the UFC’s “Baddest Motherf*****” title, as he prepares to defend it against Diego Lopes.

In March, Oliveira came under criticism for the manner of his “BMF” title win against Max Holloway, as he outgrappled the Hawaiian for the best part of 25 minutes and won on points.

Some fans felt that Oliveira’s performance was not in the spirit of the title’s lineage, which has included an inaugural reign from fan favourite Jorge Masvidal, a stunning head-kick knockout of Dustin Poirier by Justin Gaethje, and Holloway’s own buzzer-beater KO against Gaethje.

Yet Oliveira, a former lightweight champion, said to MMA Fighting: “Brother, let me tell you something: God himself couldn’t please everyone, so imagine me.

“You work in this business, so you can speak on it. If I go out there and trade punches and get knocked out, I’m ‘stupid’ because I could have used jiu-jitsu. If I go out there and use jiu-jitsu, then it ‘sucks’.

“Let’s talk about the BMF belt. People might want to see two guys stand in front of each other, throw bombs, and beat each other up to see who can knock the other guy out. Sure, that could happen and it would be cool, but I’m not here to please anyone; I’m here to go out there, fight, and win.

“If I lost to [Mateusz] Gamrot, Max, or whoever else, there’s absolutely no doubt that I wouldn’t be making the money I make, and I wouldn’t even be in the UFC.”

Holloway, despite his loss to the Brazilian, got a major fight in his next outing – against Conor McGregor in July. Although McGregor suffered an injury in the opening phases of the bout, Holloway benefited from the spotlight that came with facing McGregor, and some suggested that Oliveira would have occupied that place if he’d beaten Holloway in a different fashion.

“A lot of people said, ‘If Charles had been more aggressive, maybe Charles could have gotten the kind of fight Max had with Conor,’” Oliveira said. “Would Conor even have accepted a fight with me?

“I’m going to be very truthful here: anyone who’s a fighter or an athlete knows that nobody in the division has done to Max what I did to him – nobody. I respect the hell out of Max, but anyone who watched the fight saw that I made Max look like nothing, both standing and on the ground.

“My best punches landed, my best kicks landed, and every takedown I went for, I got him down. My ground control was 100 per cent. ‘Oh, but the BMF fight is about going there and breaking each other up.’ Then honestly, brother, here’s the belt; take it somewhere else. That belt is not for me.”

Oliveira, 37, will defend the title against Lopes in the main event of UFC 335 on 12 December. Lopes is a former two-time title challenger at featherweight, but he will move up to 155lb to face Oliveira.
