Chelsea face an added challenge in Saturday’s Premier League clash with Manchester United after Michael Carrick confirmed that Bruno Fernandes will remain captain following their recent disagreement. The attacking midfielder is now expected to start at Stamford Bridge.
Fernandes sparked controversy after publicly questioning Carrick’s tactics following Man Utd’s 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como last week. He was subsequently dropped and remained an unused substitute as United lost 3-0 to Bournemouth on Sunday.
However, Carrick has since held clear-the-air talks with his captain and insisted the matter has been resolved. Fernandes is arguably United’s best player and has enjoyed plenty of success against Chelsea in recent years.
Michael Carrick has reaffirmed Bruno Fernandes’ importance to Manchester United ahead of Saturday’s trip to Chelsea. The United boss insists the midfielder remains fully committed despite their recent tensions.
“He’s an important player for this group,” Carrick said at his press conference on Thursday. “He’s fully committed to this club, making things better. He’s the one who’s led the team so well for many a year. He’ll continue to do that.”

Fernandes has struggled to make his usual impact this season, with no goal contributions in his last five Premier League games. However, he remains one of United’s most influential players and has thrived against Chelsea in the past, meaning the Blues cannot afford to give him time and space on the ball.
Moises Caicedo, Romeo Lavia or Jordan Henderson could be tasked with keeping the playmaker quiet at Stamford Bridge. They will also need to keep tabs on Kobbie Mainoo, who could return to the squad after stepping up his recovery in training.
Carrick added: “Good news, Kobbie did a little bit of training yesterday, so he’s back in and around the group, so that’s obviously a positive.”

Bruno Fernandes has a decent record against Chelsea, contributing five goals and two assists in 14 appearances for Man Utd. However, his recent form against the Blues is particularly concerning, with four goals and one assist in their last seven meetings.
| Date | Fixture | Result | Goal contributions |
| 25 May 2023 | Man Utd vs Chelsea | 4–1 | 1 goal |
| 6 Dec 2023 | Man Utd vs Chelsea | 2–1 | 0 |
| 4 Apr 2024 | Chelsea vs Man Utd | 4–3 | 1 goal |
| 3 Nov 2024 | Man Utd vs Chelsea | 1–1 | 1 goal |
| 16 May 2025 | Chelsea vs Man Utd | 1–0 | 0 |
| 20 Sep 2025 | Man Utd vs Chelsea | 2-1 | 1 goal |
| 18 Apr 2026 | Chelsea vs Man Utd | 0-1 | 1 assist |
Fernandes’ standout moment against Chelsea may have come last season, when he scored his 100th goal for United in his 200th Premier League appearance. Meanwhile, the Blues have leaked goals throughout the 2026/27 campaign, so it would hardly be surprising to see the Portuguese playmaker find the net again on Saturday.
