Sky Sports commentator Alan Smith believes the problems are mounting for Man Utd and head coach Michael Carrick.
Leaks from the dressing room suggest players are questioning their fitness levels and the manager’s tactics. Combined with another defeat and Lisandro Martinez’s public outburst about the club, things are already coming to a head.
Speaking exclusively to Man U News (courtesy of Best Betting Sites UK), Smith said that Carrick is not solely to blame for the club’s plight, but the current situation is unsustainable:
“The performances are all you need to see, really, aside from these leaks. They’re just not running. The effort isn’t what it should be. So you can’t put all that onto the coach. But another bad defeat last night, another bad performance. Lisandro Martínez has come out and criticised the recruitment policy and everything. It seems to be crumbling a bit at Old Trafford. Everything’s going wrong. So how that’s going to turn out, we’ll have to wait and see.”
Bookmakers have placed odds of between 11/8 and 13/8 on the 45-year-old being the next Premier League manager to leave his post.
Carrick is now the favourite to be sacked ahead of Fulham’s Alvaro Arbeloa and Tottenham’s Roberto De Zerbi.
Martinez’s remarks about the club’s poor summer recruitment have ratcheted up the pressure on Director of Football Jason Wilcox.
Multiple reports suggest that the dressing room is very much behind Martinez, but the player himself is said to have an alterior motive.
The Argentinian international is out of contract at the end of the season and The Guardian claim he is angling for a move away from Old Trafford, with his criticism of Wilcox likely to hasten his exit.
In terms of Wilcox himself, as long as he still has the backing of minority owner Jim Ratcliffe, it’s unlikely that he will be leaving anytime soon.
