Walsall got an apology after Swindon Town ref controversy

On Saturday, Swindon ended up feeling pretty lucky to come away with a point against The Saddlers.

Aaron Drinan gave Town the lead after just five minutes, and there were more chances prior to half-time for that lead to be extended.

But things switched after the break, as Tai Sodje nodded in a leveller, and thought he had a second when he headed in Aaron Pressley’s deflected effort, but that was called back for offside.

After one minor penalty shout had been turned down, which Grant was booked for complaining about, the biggest controversy came in the 82nd minute when Connor Ripley came flying out and brought down Sodje, only for the referee not to give the spot kick.

Both Ripley and Ian Holloway admitted that it should have been a penalty after the game, and Grant revealed in his post-match press conference following Walsall’s 3-0 win over Oldham Athletic that an apology had been issued over the incident.

He said: "If you look at our performance at the weekend, we understood that we’d done enough to win the game.

"We scored a legitimate goal, we should’ve had a penalty. On that, I’ve had that clarified fully. There was no denying any of those facts. There was a huge apology from the officials on that.

"We accept that and we know that we want to turn every game and every opportunity into three points and maximum return. When the opportunity isn’t there to do that, then try not to get beat.

"We’re ok with that and it’s significant that we managed to take that step forward tonight."

The incident came even more into focus after Ripley’s logic-defying performance against Barnet on Tuesday night, in which, according to xGOT, he prevented 4.54 goals, when he likely should have been suspended for the match; he headlined Swindon’s 3-0 win at Barnet.

Holloway said after the Walsall game that he hoped the referee’s mistake proved to be a turning point for Swindon.

He said: "I have to say, I thought Connor should have been sent off, and I thought that was a penalty.

"If that would have happened, God knows how we all we'd all be feeling now. So maybe that's the turning point. Who knows? The ref saw it that way. Lots of them wouldn't have done.”
