1. SUNDAY SPECIAL: LUKA MAKES HISTORY, C’S STAY HOT, YAXEL POPS OFF

Luka Dončić

Seven days after netting an NBA season-high 52 points, Luka Dončić stirred up more Sunday magic.

And this time, it was a one-of-one performance.

Lakers 131, Raptors 125: To cap Halloweekend, Luka delivered a monstrous stat line of 45 points, 15 boards, 6 dimes and 5 steals while draining eight 3s as the Lakers held off Scottie Barnes (29 pts, 6 reb, 5 ast) and improve to 5-2. | Recap

  • Unprecedented: Dončić is the first player in NBA history to record 45+ points, 15+ rebounds, 5+ assists, 5+ steals and 5+ 3s in a game
  • Unguardable: The reigning scoring champ is now pacing the NBA with an absurd 37.7 ppg, while averaging 5.8 treys at a 43.2% clip
  • Unreal: That makes Dončić (226 pts) just the third player since 1960 to tally 225+ points through his first six games of a season, joining Michael Jordan (1986) and Wilt Chamberlain (2x)
  • “It feels like a supernova, but it also feels normal,” said Lakers coach JJ Redick postgame. “Maybe we live on a spaceship, and we’re going at the speed of light at all times when he’s on the court.”
  • Back For More: Los Angeles sits 4th in the West and seeks its second win in two days tonight as it hosts Giannis Antetokounmpo and Miami (10 ET, League Pass)

Jayson Tatum

The first game of the NBA season saw the Celtics surrender a 22-point lead in a loss to Detroit.

Boston hasn’t lost since.

Celtics 108, Magic 97: Holding a four-point edge with 3:41 left, Jayson Tatum (32 pts, 7 ast, 2 blk) delivered back-to-back clutch buckets before Paul George (17 pts, 8 ast) buried a dagger 3 to secure the C’s fifth straight win. | Recap

  • Closing Time: Boston finished the game on an 11-4 run, which included a pair of key blocks from Neemias Queta (8 pts, 8 reb)
  • Boston Balance: The Celtics (5-1) rank 5th in offensive rating (117.7) and 9th in defensive rating (107.9), sitting just a half-game behind Philly for 1st in the East
  • And JT Is Cooking: Tatum (28.3 ppg, 7.7 apg) joins Larry Bird (1987-88) and John Havlicek (1970-71) as the only Celtics to average 28+ pts and 7+ ast through the first six games of a season

Tatum wasn’t alone in joining some special company Sunday.

And the C’s weren’t the only team to extend their win streak.

Warriors 124, Clippers 112: With Steph Curry out (back), rookie Yaxel Lendeborg took his breakout party to another level, dropping 37 points on six 3s along with 4 boards and 6 dimes to lead Golden State past LA for its fourth straight win. | Recap

  • Golden Trio: Lendeborg is just the third Warriors rookie to tally 150+ points in his first seven career games. The other two? Rick Barry (160) and Wilt Chamberlain (262)
  • Like 30: His 37 points last night are also the most by a Warriors rookie since … Curry’s 42 in 2010
  • Steph Approved: And when your sixth trey of the night draws this reaction from the all-time 3-point leader, you know you’re doing something right
  • “It’s remarkable the impact he’s making on these games,” said Warriors coach Steve Kerr postgame. “We scored 124 points, and Yax is the main reason.”
  • Rookies Cooking: There were five 30+ point games by rookies in the entire first month of last season. This season, in only 13 days, we’ve already seen six

Nets 98, Pacers 90: Julius Randle (20 pts, 6 ast) and Day’Ron Sharpe (15 pts, 13 reb) controlled the paint, while Michael Porter Jr. scored a team-high 23 points as the Nets topped the shorthanded Pacers for their first win this season. | Recap

2. WHAT’S TRENDING – WEST: UNBEATEN GRIZZ HIGHLIGHT HOT STARTS

Only one unbeaten team remains in the NBA. And for the first time in league history, it’s the Memphis Grizzlies.

Tonight on League Pass (8 ET), the Grizzlies will look to achieve their first-ever 7-0 start, facing Zion Williamson and the Pelicans.

How’d Memphis get to 6-0? With elite play on both ends, powered by a breakout rookie and a veteran marksman who’s caught fire.

  • Early Splashes: The latter would be Ty Jerome (team-high 25.8 ppg), who scored 28+ points in each of Memphis’ first three outings, while this year’s No. 3 pick, Cameron Boozer (17.3 pts, 10.5 reb, 5.7 ast), has emerged as a young force
  • Boozer’s Latest: On Thursday vs. Portland, Boozer became the second-youngest player to record a triple-double. Two nights later, he dropped a career-high 27 points vs. Sacramento
  • The Results: With Boozer and Jerome leading the way, Memphis ranks top three in both offensive (3rd) and defensive rating (2nd), fueling the NBA’s best net rating (+14.7)

Right behind Memphis in the West standings sit the 6-1 Rockets, a squad firing on all cylinders offensively.

  • All Systems Go: Led by Alperen Sengun (22.8 ppg) and Kevin Durant (22), Houston has eight players averaging double figures – more than any other team
  • Full Throttle Attack: The Rockets lead the league in offensive rating (121.2) and trail only Memphis in net rating at +12.3

The only team that’s knocked off Houston? That would be Dallas, which is heating up behind Cooper Flagg’s sophomore surge.

  • Year 2 Jump: Flagg’s versatility has hit another level this season, as he’s averaging 26.8 points (7th in NBA), 6.0 rebounds, 6.6 assists and 2.6 steals (4th)
  • Going For Four: Tonight on League Pass, the 4-2 Mavs eye their fourth win in a row as they host Sacramento (8 ET)

The reigning West champion Spurs are also streaking, bouncing back from an 0-2 start with four straight dubs.

  • Alien Everywhere: Victor Wembanyama has been dominant, posting 28.0 points (6th in NBA), 10.7 boards (5th) and 4.2 blocks (1st) per game, highlighted by a Halloween takeover
  • Spurs Ball: During the win streak, the Spurs are averaging 122.5 ppg and are tied for 1st in assists with 30.8 per game
  • Eyeing Five: San Antonio looks for its fifth straight win tonight as it hosts Utah (8:30 ET, League Pass)

More Out West: Deni Avdija and the Blazers are also off to a strong start at 4-1, while the 4-2 Thunder (Jalen Williams, Chet Holmgren, Cason Wallace) and 4-3 Wolves (Anthony Edwards) navigate key early-season injuries.

Two weeks into the season, the East is already heating up, with familiar contenders setting the pace and new faces making their mark.

Philly Flying: Amid a star-studded core, Tyrese Maxey has taken the lead for the 6-1 Sixers, building on last season’s career year with a scorching start.

  • Money Maxey: Maxey, fresh off a 38-point outing to beat Charlotte on Saturday, ranks 2nd in the NBA in scoring (29.6 ppg) and hasn’t tallied fewer than 25 points all season
  • Cup Night King: One night before beating Charlotte, Philly took down the defending champion Knicks for a second time this season, with LeBron James coming up with two clutch buckets in the final 1:10 to seal the win
  • Stars & Stops: Jaylen Brown (19.8) and Joel Embiid (19.2) have added 39 ppg for Philly, which owns the league’s 3rd-best defensive rating (104.9)
  • Eyeing 7-1: The Sixers seek their fourth straight win tonight as they host Caleb Wilson and the Bulls (7:30 ET, League Pass)

Tied with Boston for 2nd place and sitting just a half-game back of Philly are the 5-1 Pistons, the only team to beat the Sixers this season.

And after racking up an East-best 60 wins last season, Detroit is leaning on a familiar formula.

  • Defense First: The Pistons boast the NBA’s best defensive rating (103.2) and have held their opponents to a league-best 41.7% from the field
  • Cade & DBo: Cade Cunningham continues to operate offensively (22.2 ppg, 7.2 apg), while Duncan Robinson (16.8 ppg, 3.7 3pm) has shot a scorching 41.5% from 3

One game back of Detroit and Boston sit the 4-2 Cavs, who rank 2nd in scoring (121 ppg), with Donovan Mitchell (22.7 pts) leading seven players averaging double figures.

  • Tonight on Peacock & NBCSN (7 ET), Cleveland faces OKC, which seeks a timely win amid a two-game skid

In Washington, AJ Dybantsa (18 ppg) is already electrifying the District through his first two NBA games.

  • Instant Impact: Dybantsa scored a team-high 19 points against Cleveland on Wednesday, becoming the seventh No. 1 pick since 1982-83 to lead his team in scoring in his NBA debut
  • Off The Jump: That included a half-court lob from Trae Young for his first career bucket. Two nights later, he scored 17 to help Washington to an Emirates NBA Cup win over Charlotte
  • Monday Mission: Tonight, the Wizards (3-3) look to go over .500 through their first seven games for the first time in five years as they visit the Magic (7:30 ET, League Pass)

Meanwhile, Jalen Brunson and the 2-4 Knicks look to gain ground as they host the Nets in the Battle of the Boroughs (7:30 ET).

4. POWER RANKINGS: WHO’S CLIMBING AFTER WEEK 2?

Two weeks into the NBA season, several teams are climbing the standings, and they’re making moves in John Schuhmann’s latest Power Rankings, too.

From unbeaten Memphis to a red-hot Golden State squad, three teams made notable climbs in this week’s rankings. Read more later today on the NBA App when the full list comes out.

Grizzlies (Ranked 17th last week ➡️ 5th this week): “Since the league expanded to 30 teams in 2004-05, every team that started 6-0 has gone on to make the Playoffs, with 19 of the 20 having finished as a 5 seed or higher and 18 of the 20 having won at least one Playoff series.”

Warriors (26 ➡️ 15): “The Warriors account for three of the 11 games where a team has made at least 20 3-pointers. No other team has had more than one.”

Mavericks (20 ➡️ 14): “Cooper Flagg is 8-for-9 on clutch shots (with the score within five points in the last five minutes of the fourth quarter or OT), and he’s 11-for-14 from mid-range over the Mavs’ three-game winning streak.”

5. FANTASY FINDS: WAIVER WIRE ADDS AHEAD OF WEEK 3

November is here, and fantasy managers have an early chance to spot emerging contributors before they become coveted waiver-wire additions.

Ahead of Week 3, RotoWire’s Mike Barner highlights several players worth targeting, including these two High Score league options:

Terrence Shannon Jr.: “He scored 19 points against the Warriors and is now averaging 14.2 points for the season … There could be nights in which he explodes in the scoring column, making him an intriguing option for this format.”

Mikel Brown Jr.: “The Nets have been cautious with their prized rookie as he comes back from an ankle injury that plagued him during the preseason. However, he is already one of the most talented scorers on the Nets behind Julius Randle and Michael Porter Jr.”
