Voltar
This sport doesn’t make sense. The latest example: One week after climbing to No. 1 in the US LBM Coaches Poll, Georgia lost 27-24 in the final seconds to Auburn, of all teams, to leave no unbeaten teams in the SEC as the regular season rounds into the second half.
A week ago, the Bulldogs took advantage of a late Alabama meltdown for a 20-17 win. Seven days later, there is chaos atop the SEC and the Power Four, with no clear No. 1 or favorite for the national championship.
This should end up being one of the craziest results of the season. Auburn has been better under new coach Alex Golesh, who looks like Vince Lombardi compared to his predecessor, Hugh Freeze.
But the Tigers are in the early stages of a soft reboot while Georgia has continued to be an SEC juggernaut. It goes to show: Nowadays, virtually no team and no record is safe.
That includes Georgia playing at home. The Bulldogs took a 14-0 lead after scoring touchdowns on their first two possessions, with both drives spanning at least 75 yards. Then Auburn took control.
The Tigers evened the score in the second quarter and then went ahead 17-14 at halftime. They added another score on a Byrum Brown touchdown run in the third quarter. Brown threw for 150 yards but was more impactful as a runner, gaining 115 yards on 26 carries with a touchdown.
Georgia was unable to regain a foothold from the midway point of the first quarter until several minutes into the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs evened the game at 24-24 on a 94-yard scoring drive capped by a short touchdown pass from Gunner Stockton with 5:16 to play.
But after getting the ball back around midfield, Stockton fumbled in the final minute after colliding with offensive lineman Drew Bobo. Auburn recovered the fumble and then was able to move into field-goal range thanks to an idiotic personal foul on an unnecessary hit by a Georgia defender.
With no time left, Auburn’s Alex McPherson drilled a 33-yard attempt to give the Tigers the win.
This upset was goosed by two Georgia turnovers. The Bulldogs also missed a field goal in the second quarter. That came between two Auburn scores and represented a failure to regain momentum and control of the game’s pace.
The loss isn’t fatal for Georgia, and more likely than not will be a weird footnote at the end of this season. The Bulldogs still look like the best team in the SEC; one loss doesn’t change that, even if the loss comes to Auburn.
Not that there aren’t any questions coming out of Saturday. Two are front and center:
Georgia ran for 113 yards on 28 carries with a long of 24 yards. Hit or miss the past few years, this ground game has to control the line of scrimmage against opponents such as Auburn.
And Stockton had to leave the game on the first drive. He returned but not at his normally efficient level, completing 22 of 34 attempts for 272 yards and tossing a pair of interceptions.
For the Tigers, however, this is a mammoth win that puts wind in Golesh’s sails and provides an early proof of concept for his tenure.
