Kinawley (Fermanagh) 0-6 v St Ergnat’s Moneyglass (Antrim) 7-17
Antrim Champions St Ergnat’s Moneyglass came to Patrick McManus Park in Kinawley on Sunday afternoon and were fully deserving winners over a gallant Kinawley side who just came up against a much superior opposition on the day.
Moneyglass are fancied by many to go all the way in Ulster and beyond this year with current form and with big wins so far over St Eunan’s Letterkenny and now Kinawley it’s clear to see why.
Kinawley can still look back on a great season that they achieved the double of Championship and League Division 1 title.
This game was controlled by the Antrim champions throughout with prolific attacker Orlaith Prenter hitting a devastating 2-6 over the course of an hour.
Kinawley though started the better of the two sides with the slight wind advantage they hit scores via Gemma McCaffrey and Joanne Doonan to lead early on.
St Ergnat’s though clicked into gear and goals from Maria O’Neill and Leah Stewart were added to with points from Orlaith Prenter, Cliona Griffin and Ruby McErlain to move 0-2 to 2-3 ahead after 18 opening first half minutes.
Sarah O’Neill would then pick up a needless yellow card for the Antrim side for mouthing at officials before Kinawley swooped in for three well-worked scores from Gemma McCaffrey and two from the lively Joanne Doonan, 0-5 to 2-3.
Ruby McErlain and Cliona Griffin though finished the half well for the away side and by the break there was six between them, 0-5 to 2-5.
With the wind advantage increasing it was clear Kinawley had work to do in the second half and St Ergnat’s started with real zest as Orlaith Prenter swooped for a quickfire 1-1 in just 90 seconds to move her side well clear, 0-5 to 3-6.
St Ergnat’s kept moving the ball at speed with points coming from Prenter, Griffin and Stewart before Ruby McErlain hit a well-worked goal on 39 minutes, 0-5 to 4-9.
Prenter hit another point before the onslaught continued as Sarah O’Neill hit her side's fifth goal and with still 19 minutes to play it was 0-5 to 5-10.
Aine Haren and Kate Murphy were working hard to deny St Ergnat’s adding further scores, but the Antrim champions were not to be denied further score as Ruby McErlain hit another point.
Kate Murphy did reply for Kinawley, but this was a different type of side that Kinawley have met all year and Prenter hit a two-pointer before a goal to leave it 0-6 to 6-13.
Sarah O’Neill moved in for her second goal of the game while further scores were supplied by Griffin, McAreavey, McErlain and Stewart to leave 32 points between them at the end.
Moneyglass now march into a home Semi Final this weekend against Derry side Steelstown.
