Classy Owens makes it five pro wins in Donegal
Rhys Owens made it five wins from five in Letterkenny.

I’m beginning to run out of superlatives to describe Enniskillen boxer Rhys Owens.

The Ennismillen man made it five wins from five in style at the Aura Leisure Centre in Letterkenny, overcoming a tricky opponent from Peru in what was another impressive display.

It was a pleasure to be there to witness it.

From the moment he entered the ring, cheered on by his large and loyal fan base who travelled to support him despite the difficult conditions, Owens oozed class, confidence and charisma.

This was another step in his professional journey and one he took in his stride.

A class of his own

Competing in his first eight-round bout, Owens set the tempo from the opening bell, using his sharp jab, intelligent movement and neat combinations to dictate the pace of the contest.

He looked composed throughout, controlled the fight from start to finish and showed exactly why there is so much excitement surrounding his career.

There was only ever going to be one winner.

When the final bell sounded, Owens celebrated another victory with the same class and character that have become his trademark, making sure to acknowledge the fans who had travelled to cheer him on.

For all his talent inside the ring, it is that connection with his supporters that makes him such a special figure to follow.

Pride of Fermanagh

I’ve been fortunate enough to follow Rhys throughout his amateur career and now into the professional ranks.

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that this young man has what it takes to win a professional title in the years ahead.

Of course, there is still plenty of hard work to be done. But Owens has already shown the ability, discipline and determination required to keep moving forward.

He will rightly enjoy tonight’s success, savour the moment and take pride in another milestone achieved.

But come next week, I have little doubt he will be straight back in the gym, working tirelessly towards the next challenge and continuing his pursuit of the dreams he has worked so hard to chase.

For now, though, Enniskillen can take great pride in one of its own.

Rhys Owens is five from five, he is carrying himself with class both inside and outside the ring and he is giving local boxing fans plenty of reasons to believe that even bigger nights lie ahead.

So let’s get behind Lights Out. Let’s continue to support him, celebrate his achievements and show him just how proud we are to have him representing our town.

If the journey so far is anything to go by, the best of Rhys Owens may still be to come
