The defensive partnership between Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven formed the bedrock of Tottenham Hotspur‘s backline, combining aggressive anticipation with recovering pace. Reflecting on his time sharing the pitch at N17, former Spurs captain Cristian Romero spoke with journalist Gaston Edul to share deep insight into the Dutch center-back’s rapid development and world-class potential, as shared by journalist Chris Cowlin on X.

Romero reflected fondly on their time together in North London, describing their defensive pairing as a genuinely special period in his club career.

“At the club level, at Tottenham, I got to share a lot with Micky van de Ven and I feel that it was impressive. He is an incredible player and he has everything.”

Highlighting an All-Round Modern Defensive Profile

Van de Ven’s arrival at Tottenham saw him instantly adapt to the demands of Premier League football, winning over supporters with his recovery speed and ball-playing composure. Romero broke down the specific attributes that make the 25-year-old Dutchman such an complete central defender, pointing to his technical quality and comfort operating in a high defensive line.

“He has speed, he plays the ball, he is fast, he defends well, defends high, plays well with his feet, is technical. I think obviously it will depend on him, because he is young, where and what he wants to do for his career because he has it all.”

Beyond individual skill sets, Romero highlighted the intuitive chemistry that developed between the two center-backs from the moment they first partnered up on the pitch. The Argentine World Cup winner noted that their understanding allowed both players to reach higher individual standards.

“Truthfully at club level, I feel he has been a team-mate that understood me very well from day one and who elevated me, I elevated him and I also have a very good relationship (with him). He’s a very good centre-back.”

With Roberto De Zerbi continuing to refine Tottenham’s high-possession approach, having defenders capable of building from the back and controlling large spaces remains paramount. Romero’s high praise serves as a strong reminder of Van de Ven’s vital importance as Spurs build toward a promising campaign.
