It may surprise some to learn that Scottie Scheffler now has a losing record in playoffs on the PGA Tour, having been beaten by both Matthew Fitzpatrick and Viktor Hovland in 2026.
Scottie Scheffler has won just two of his five playoffs on the PGA Tour so far. His most recent victory came at the Travelers Championship back in 2024, with good friend Tom Kim losing out at TPC River Highlands.
Interestingly, Scheffler actually lost his first ever playoff in a professional event when he was on the Korn Ferry Tour back in 2019.
Robby Shelton, the player who beat him seven years ago, has just missed out on earning his PGA Tour card for the 2027 season through the second tier.
Shelton himself had been beaten in his first playoff on what was then known as the Web.com Tour. Lanto Griffin beat him at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail Championship in April. It would have been particularly disappointing for Shelton, with the event taking place in his home state of Alabama.
He would not have to wait too long for a first professional win at that level, however. Shelton and Scheffler finished the Nashville Golf Open level on 15 under par. Scheffler had been in the driving seat during the latter stages of the final round, but made a bogey on the penultimate hole.
Shelton forced his way into the playoff with a birdie on the 18th. And when he repeated the feat in the playoff, he secured the victory.
Later that same month, Shelton won the Knoxville Open. With that, he earned his PGA Tour card for the following season.
Scheffler, meanwhile, went on to win twice that season.
A third place finish at the 3M Open helped Shelton finish 66th in the FedEx Cup and hold onto his card in 2020.
Unfortunately, the 31-year-old has bounced between the PGA Tour and the Korn Ferry Tour in the last few years. He did beat Ben Griffin in a playoff for his third win on the second tier in 2022.
This year, Shelton finished 26th in the Korn Ferry Tour points race. While he has finished second and third this season, he has only had one other top-10. Meanwhile, he has missed the cut nine times.
Shelton is now the world number 243, having closed in on the top-100 earlier in his career.
Scheffler is far from the only star of the current game Shelton has crossed paths with, with the pair also teammates at the 2012 Junior Ryder Cup.
In 2015, Shelton actually played alongside Bryson DeChambeau in one session during the Walker Cup. The pair won 3&2, but it was a very disappointing week for Team USA as they were comfortably beaten.
It was during the 2015 season that Shelton also registered the highest finish in a PGA Tour event by an amateur since Phil Mickelson in 1991. He finished tied for third at that year’s Barbasol Championship.
Hopefully, it will not be too long before Shelton is getting another chance to take on many of the best on the PGA Tour.
